Rosemary took aim. She locked her sight onto the target, Ronald. She was about to shoot the man she loved to save him for a second time.

There was no choice in the matter at all. They had agreed. It was a pact they both swore, to prevent capture by the German 'Schutzstaffel'. They had won many victories against this curse that had fallen on France. Together, mission after mission, success after success. They both knew that it was only a matter of time. The capture of either or both of them was inevitable.

Her rifle, supported on a sandbag, was stable and pointing right at Ronald. She'd sooner him die with a bullet from his lover than suffer at the hands of the German SS.

Rosemary took a deep breath, focused the sight on his heart. Her hand shook. Her breath slowed to steady her aim. Time was of the essence. She could see him looking at her. Pleading for her to do it.

2 years earlier...

Ronald Mason and Rosemary Harmon were the Bonnie and Clyde of the French Resistance. Rosemary's father was Jewish and she lost both her parents. Both executed by the Germans. She was only eighteen, but had a thirst for revenge and hitchhiked her way across the country to France. There she enlisted in the French resistance after taking out a German patrol. Single-handed.

Rosemary was soon heading up her own missions to halt the advance of the German seventh army. She saw this as the backbone of the German forces in the area joining the Brittany and Normandy regions.

It was when she set up a covert radio network to provide daily feedback to the allies, that she met Ronald Mason. He was a fighter pilot and an expert in radio networks. His plane developed technical difficulties and he had to make an emergency landing. His plane was on fire and he was unconscious. Without hesitation, Rosemary risked her life to save him from the wreckage.

That's when they met and fell in love. They were the perfect match both in love and battle. His superior knowledge of radio networks combined with her stealth techniques made them a formidable force.

Together they hampered the German ground forces as much as they could. They had a very strong following and their radio network provided valuable intelligence. The French resistance had spotters in every town and village. It was an elaborate network that was impenetrable. They had radio stations concealed in some of the most unusual places. Some built secret cavities in the existing walls of houses. Ronald had devised a special code to warn the French resistance of the location SS search parties.

Rosemary and Ronald soon rose to the very top of the German armies most wanted. There was a price on their heads. If either of them was to fall into enemy hands it would yield a heavy blow to the allied forces. Death for the both of them would be inevitable.

✺ ✺ ✺

Rosemary had saved Ronald from a burning fuselage and doing so found true love. She would do anything for him. She adored his playful blue eyes and cheeky monkey-like smile. He was a well-built farmer boy from the heart of Yorkshire; Askrigg. A small village that bathed itself in the green hills of the Yorkshire dales. It was a place people cared and looked out for one another.

Rosemary's one regret was that she had no family to show him off to. She assumed that all her relatives were also dead by now.

Together they lived a dangerous life, but one of purpose.

They lay snoozing in a meadow in the baking sun surrounded by nothing but natural beauty. Brown and white patchy cows grazed nearby. They were about to make love. It had become a routine before and after a mission.

Ronald rolled over on top of Rosemary. He looked down into her dark fiery brown eyes.

They kissed. Slow and gentle at first.

'I love you my darling.' Rosemary responded by unbuttoning her blouse, allowing her breasts to become exposed.

'Well hello, what do we have here?' He often joked about her petit breasts.

She laughed, placed her hands around his neck and encouraged him to her breast.

Ronald obliged and teased the nipples with his tongue until they became alert.

Their passion intensified.

'Come on my darling what are you waiting for? Don't make me beg.' Rosemary was on fire and she wanted only one thing at that very moment. To make love to this crazy Englishman.

Ronald continued to tease Rosemary as he moved down her body.

The smell was sweet. She was very wet. He kissed her and teased her clitoris with his tongue.

Rosemary place her hands on his head, pushing him away. She couldn't wait any longer. 'Come on darling.' She pushed his trousers off of his hips. She reached for his penis. It was firm. She loved the feel of it.

Ronald sighed and slid it into Rosemary,

'That feels good,' she gasped. Her eyes rolled back as he worked himself back and forth.

They paused for a passionate kiss before they continued.

They were both panting as his rhyme intensified. Both were sweating. The midday sun was at it its hottest. The background melody was that of Swallows swooping low over the tops of the grass.

'Come on my love.'

Ronald responded. His rhythm intensified even more until he could hold back no longer. He let out a controlled grunt.

Their breath was heavy.

Ronald gazed into her starry eyes.

Their lips connected. This kiss was gentle and purposeful.

Ronald rolled onto his back next to Rosemary.

'When do you think this damn war will be over?' Rosemary rolled up to look at him, hand supporting her head from behind her ear.

'I have no idea. The allied forces are gathering. An attack is imminent. Everyone knows that including the Germans.'

'They do not seem too bothered?'

'No, but intelligence has intercepted calls to Hitler calling for more forces.'

Rosemary had a troubling thought. She sat up. 'Ronald, I want you to promise me something.'

'Go on.' He was expecting something naughty and suggestive.

'Will you promise me that you will not let the Germans take me alive? Shoot me if you have to?'

Ronald sat up and looked at Rosemary.

'What makes you think they're going to catch us, my sweet Rose?'

'You must promise me Ronnie.' A tiny tear appeared in her left eye.

'What's brought this on?' Ronnie looked at her.

'I saw what those bastards did. You must promise to shoot me,' She insisted.

Ronnie looked in search of a response. There was only one. "Fine, then let's agree that in the event one of us gets captured, we would shoot each other?'

Rose threw her arms around his neck, 'We know too much. they would torture us my darling until they get what they want. We would not be doing this for us only.'

Ronnie knew she was right. I didn't want to admit it, but he had been wondering about the what-if scenarios? He offered his hand.

Rose took it, 'Agreed.'

'Agreed then,' he replied.

Present-day...

That was the last time they had made love. The last time they had been alone together away from everything. With it, they sealed their true love for one another and their fate. Rosemary cleared her mind to focus on the target. She brushed the side of the rifle with her index finger, placed it on the trigger and fired. She was about to save him from the Germans for the second time. There was a huge explosion followed by a ball of flame.
