Discovering the Unique Blend of Boulder ...

Discovering the Unique Blend of Boulder at the Trident Cafe

Apr 16, 2023

Where better to post about buying coffee than on Buy Me a Coffee? And I wouldn't know a better place in the U.S. to buy coffee than the cafe I described today to some friends I met there as the best cafe I know in America.

That needs a bit more explanation. As some of you may know, I spoke the past few days in a few panels during the Conference on World Affairs at Colorado University, Boulder. This annual event is one of the reasons that I have visited this beautiful city so often in the past years. And I don't believe I have ever been to Boulder without stopping in the Trident Cafe on Pearl Street.

I remember a friend recommending a visit to the Trident Cafe, a beloved establishment in Boulder, Colorado that has been popular since its opening in 1980. And since my first coffee there, I always feel that this cozy and welcoming cafe reflects the values and interests of the unique community of Boulder.

I don't believe I have ever compared a conference, a cafe, and a community in one of my articles. Still, in this case, I dare to say that the unique blend of intellectual conversations, diversity, creativity, and daring to do things differently equally applies to the Conference on World Affairs, the Trident cafe, and perhaps even the whole community of Boulder.

The Trident Cafe opened its doors in 1980, serving as a coffee shop and bookstore. The founders were passionate about creating a space where people could unite, share ideas, and connect. The cafe quickly became a popular spot for students, intellectuals, and creatives, who would spend hours sipping coffee and engaging in lively conversations.

Over the years, the Trident Cafe has undergone several renovations to improve its space, but regular guests tell me it has always maintained its cozy and inviting atmosphere. When I revisited it today, I noticed it is still a popular destination for Boulder residents and visitors alike, who come for its delicious coffee, tasty food, and welcoming ambiance.

Another thing that makes the Trident Cafe so unique is its commitment to supporting local artists and musicians. The cafe regularly hosts events, such as poetry readings, live music performances, and book signings, that showcase the talents of the Boulder community. I also noticed today that the cafe exhibited artwork by local artists, which adds to its cozy and creative atmosphere.

And as an environmentalist, I appreciate the Trident's focus on sustainability and environmental responsibility. For example, the cafe sources coffee beans from local roasters and ensures its food is made from high-quality, sustainable ingredients.

During the pandemic, the cafe faced a challenge to continue, just like so many other restaurants and cafes worldwide. However, I learned today that these hard times led to an admirable solution to change the ownership structure. The cafe's owner announced that she gave 100% of its ownership to its employees; it is now a worker-owned cooperative where each employee has a say in the cafe's decision-making process. This is a fantastic example of how businesses can adapt and thrive in challenging times.

We spoke about this and much more during my many hours in the cafe today. I met old friends who introduced me to others, and I made some new friends today. I also drank my first "Vanilla Marcha latte with oat milk and cinnamon on top," an example of the wide selection of coffee and teas they serve.

Boulder was only the start of my trip; I may share more coffee or cafe stories these days. The main articles are, as always, on: https://theplanet.substack.com/
