Why Fear Uncertainty

Why Fear Uncertainty

Aug 15, 2020

They say fear drives human beings, but there is one fear which stops us from living or creating great work is the fear of uncertainty.

Fear of an uncertain future can hold us from creating great things and can keep us onto the things that may hurt us.

Sometimes we hold ourselves from experimenting because we are too comfortable in what we have even if it gives you anxiety and cost you money.

For example, one continues with a job which isn't satisfying because one is too afraid to move on and try new things, the fear of failing not let us do better things in life.

WHY IS IT SCARY?

Think about this: the fear of an uncertain future is not scary at all; there’s nothing inherently scary about the future, even if you don't know what's going to happen.

The odds of you getting attacked tomorrow is not less than of today. Similarly, the odds of you being happy next week is as similar to today.

So why is it scary? Why is not knowing is so frightening? If you roll a dice and don't know what it will be, is this scary? The fear of not knowing is not the problem, but the problem is of the possibility of what comes after rolling a dice will bring us pain, suffering, and loss.

And this pain is not physical, no we don't fear bodily injury, but what we fear is loss and change. We are so comfortable in our shell that we don't want to break out of it. Comfortable doing what we do, what we build for ourselves, people we know, and places we are familiar with and safe to us, the routines and possessions. Losing this environment is painful and scary. It makes us vulnerable, makes us doubt ourselves, thoughts of failing, and not being good enough.

So what we can do.

Embrace the change. Learn to love with it. Once you get comfortable with the idea of change, you won't fear anything. And to get better with the change, work on these-

  • Try something new, but small.

  • Always ask yourself why are you doing this and what is the worst-case and best-case scenario.

  • If you mess up, don't be hard on you, it's not a failure but the opportunity to try something new.

  • See the opportunities that change will bring you.

  • Experience the joy of unknowing.

What is essential, time will reveal itself, have a trust? This trust we call it faith, and faith makes you fearless.
