Where Do I Teach and Why Are They Awesome?

Oct 20, 2022

Hi Baddies,

This email is arriving a little later than anticipated - I’ve been sick in bed all week and haven’t even been able to open my laptop! But here it is..

I get asked a lot about the different studios I work at, and the different styles of yoga that I teach. Most of you know that I am Perth based, and I teach all over the city. I used to teach at a lot more studios, but for now, I’m trying not to spread myself too thin.

If you aren’t from Perth, I’m about to start uploading some classes to YouTube so you can soon have a range of FREE online classes with me. I know it’s not the same vibe as being in a class, but the classes are intentionally functional, simple and clear enough to follow along with - and I’ll offer a lot more chilled options than I offer in studio.

Each studio that I work for offers something totally unique and special, and I teach differently at every one.

The Studios

Vital Beat Yoga & Pilates

Spanda School

Yogaworx

Beyondbeing Yoga

Flowspace Yoga & Pilates

Vital Beat Yoga & Pilates

It’s no secret that I am obsessed with Kaye Waterhouse and everything she says and does, so naturally I am biased toward this studio.

In short - a LOT..

In addition to the offerings mentioned above, I would describe this as the most community centred, inclusive, diverse and family friendly studio in Perth - and also one of the more affordable price points in the city, with plenty of membership options. Even though it’s a ‘Hip Hop’ yoga studio, it’s still one of the more philosophical / spiritual / cultural yoga studios out there. There is a big emphasis on us to be culturally aware, honour Vedic philosophy and the history of yoga in our teachings, and to be trauma informed.

What I Teach

Monday 6pm Yang / Yin Yoga to Neo Soul and R&B music.
Friday 4:30pm Hip Hop Reformer Pilates and 6pm Reformer Stretch
Saturday 8am and 9am Hip Hop Reformer Pilates and 10am Reformer Basics

Who is this studio NOT for?

If you’re just looking for a hard workout, a heated workout, a ‘yoga scene,’ an impersonal experience, a pet and child free space and a cookie cutter consistency.

Spanda is my newest place of teaching. It’s the warmest, most welcoming, most peaceful studio in Fremantle. Every time I go to teach or practice there, I am immediately harmonised. This studio is a heart and its success is a direct reflection of the tight ship that Ava runs, with total commitment to her mission and her vision. Her staff are 10/10 wonderful human beings. Ava is a total institution and I love her. Listen to her podcast, Functional Spirituality, it’s excellent.

This studio is a sacred space of healing. We are encouraged to keep our teaching purposeful, functional and clear - letting the practice speak for itself. There is a big emphasis on creating the right type of environment for healing.

What I Teach

Thursday 7am Mat Pilates with an emphasis on mindfulness and breath

Who is this studio NOT for?

If you’re looking for just a workout, a ‘scene,’ frills, bells and whistles - this is not it. If you’re uncomfortable with stillness and silence, If you’re looking to be anonymously lost in the crowd, this might not be for you - it’s a small space and small community and you aren’t just a number - you will be acknowledged and seen (but also your space, privacy and boundaries will be respected).

Wendy and Mal are industry legends and they have been in the game for a long time. They have a community of regular yoga students, some who have been practicing with Yogaworx for over a decade. Wendy’s class is my all time favourite class in the entire world - she has a remarkable gift for helping me drop deeply into my practice. Her knowledge and understanding of the body, the heart and the mind is unmatched. The way to describe her class evades me - it’s both intellectual and cerebral, athletic and somatic, with a prayer like spirituality. If you’re looking to advance your practice in more ways than one - this is the place.

What I Teach

Tuesday 9am 75 Minute Level 2 Intuitive Vinyasa

Who is this studio NOT for?

This is in a scout hall, so if you are looking for flashy, razzle dazzle, ultra-yoga vibes with bells and whistles, you may not enjoy the space. I love it, it’s humble, simple, bright with natural light and there’s minimal fluff, which means that the YOGA and the TEACHINGS can really be centre stage. I’m cautious to deter absolute beginners because I believe that any good teacher should be able to cater every class to both absolute beginners and advanced practitioners. However, most of the students here have been practicing for a really long time and they have quite an exceptional practice. They are used to the way the teachers command the room and their special way of cueing.

After all these years I am finally on the schedule at Beyondbeing Yoga and I am STOKED about it. I’ve been covering there for a while. My absolute favourite thing is lighting the candles on the Ganesha statue at the start of class. This studio gives really sacred vibes.

I’m not hard to please in a yoga class, I’m always happy to receive a class, but there’s only been a few people who have BLOWN me away. I haven’t been to Hayley’s class, but all my friends who have been to her class say I will absolutely love it (based on how much I love Wendy’s class at Yogaworx). A long time ago I randomly dropped into a class here with Eric Schwarz, that was the first time I met him, and I was very impressed. For that reason, I considered that this studio was serious and a bit of an institution. It’s also been quite stylish and quirky, reminding me of time I spent practicing in studios in the USA. The heating panels here are LUSH. I’ve really only met the 6am Monday people and the 4pm Saturday people - but what is unique about these students is that they remind me of the game, ‘Simon Says’ - they literally do every single thing they are told. It’s really nice to be listened to so well as a teacher, but it also shows me the style of teaching here is well established and has a large emphasis on good verbal cueing.

Who is this studio NOT for?

It’s hard for me to say because I’m so new, but the feeling I’m getting is that if you’re not serious about your practice, that you may miss the magic of this place. I think this is a great studio for the perfect combination of Yoga athleticism and Spirituality.

Ah Flowspace.. my first true love! I started my yoga journey at this studio back when it was called Bikram Yoga Perth, and I haven’t been able to stay away ever since. One of the most exciting days of my life was when Adam Rose called me to teach at Flowspace. I love the students and the community so much. This studio has the best memberships, in my humble opinion, because they offer SO many classes with the unlimited option - Pilates AND Yoga. They are very central, it’s heated, the teachers are wonderful, the classes are packed, the community is great, there are two studio locations, north and south.

Who is the studio NOT for?

It’s HOT in those classes - so if you’re heat averse, or have any blood pressure issues, I wouldn’t come here. It’s such a large class that it’s more athletic and exercise based than not, so I’d avoid if you’re looking for a very personalised experience, especially if you have injuries or are pregnant.

What are your favourite studios in Perth and why? I’d love to hear from you!

Next week I’m going to share with you all about NO-vember - the month where I’m practicing saying NO more. (I didn’t practice this in October, and I ended up burning out and sick in bed.. Not cute).

Stay Hydrated and Stay Away from F*ckboys,
