Physical inactivity is associated with a higher risk for severe COVID-19 outcomes: a study

May 16, 2021

First post on my new blog.....

A study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicines: Physical inactivity is associated with a higher risk for severe COVID-19 outcomes: a study in 48 440 adult patients

"Results: Patients with COVID-19 who were consistently inactive had a greater risk of hospitalisation, admission to the ICU and death due to COVID-19 than patients who were consistently meeting physical activity guidelines. Patients who were consistently inactive also had a greater risk of hospitalisation admission to the ICU and death due to COVID-19 than patients who were doing some physical activity.

Conclusions: Consistently meeting physical activity guidelines was strongly associated with a reduced risk for severe COVID-19 outcomes among infected adults. We recommend efforts to promote physical activity be prioritised by public health agencies and incorporated into routine medical care"

My comments: this is a growing area of research (obviously) but there is a trend forming. In addition there is some research where we could infer that people with above average levels of fitness are less likely to get the virus..... this clearly needs more research.

Governments should move on from lock-downs and start promoting physical activity in the fight against Covid.
