It's Important to Read!

Nov 10, 2021

Hey y'all,

over on my instagram I've been sharing about books that I really love and would recommend people read. For me, reading is a big part of stimulating my creativity. And that's why I want to share some of my favorite books, they are a huge part of my brand as an artist and content creator. I wanted to jump ahead here and share the books that I have lined up to share about.

1- Matisse on Art

This book grabbed me the moment I saw the cover. It's comprised of a bunch of short writings and conversations between Matisse and others, along with interviews and stuff like that all about art. There are some really big insights in here about using color, line, composition...it's pretty much Matisse's practice in words. Amazing and interesting read.

2- The Heart of the Buddha's Teaching

Something I don't talk about a lot is the fact that i'm a Buddhist. I don't really like to say that about myself because I don't know how much I believe in that title. But let's call a spade a spade and keep it moving. My first time with a sangha (religious/spiritual community) outside of my root tradition of Christianity was with a Plum Village sangha, in Denver, Colorado. I sat with them for a year...super consistently, and when my time came to move away from Denver a member of the Sangha bought this book for me. Ever since then I refer to this book often.

3- Listening to the Heartbeat of God

This was also a book I read while living in Denver. this book was impactful to me while I was trying to make sense of my identity with-in Christianity. It showed me that being religious...Christian mainly, didn't have to be so doctrine based. This book touches on the more mystic, intuitive faith of Celtic Christianity. For anyone who wants to learn about an often glossed over part of the faith this book is for you.

4- Homegoing

This is easily one of the best books I've ever read. It's a super interesting story following two family lineages from Ghana in the eighteenth century all the way up to Jazz Age Harlem. The main characters are sisters and they are seperated early on in their lives. throughout eight generations you watch their lineages continuously cross over each other. JUST READ IT!!!!!!!!!!
