Barrage of Lightning over Umhlanga

Barrage of Lightning over Umhlanga

An absolute barrage of lightning over Durban this evening...

This evening a storm was approaching Durban from further inland. The awesome folks at the Radisson Blu let me up onto their rooftop to take some photos of the thunderstorm.

I pointed my camera over the greater Durban area, and the view was spectacular. The lights of the city shining brightly as the storm was building overhead.

Unfortunately there were more flashes in the clouds than actual visible strikes, but the moody sky was amazing to witness. Soon the rain chased me inside...

The storm passed overhead and out to sea, and as the rain slowly dissipated, I went back out and pointed my camera towards the ocean.

The strikes would flash through the air, and then disintegrate into oblivion with a fiery roar. They were so incredibly bright that when you closed your eyes, you could still see them traced on your eyelids.

You could hear the ocean far below, only for the explosions and rumbles from the thunder to drown out the crashing waves for a few seconds at a time, whilst the rumble echoed across the ocean...

The rain returned, so I decided to head home. The lightning continued long after I had left.

I took a few photos tonight, but I decided to share this one in the meantime. I hope that you like it.

This is a composite image created from some of the images that I captured, which have then been overlayed to create the single image.

South Africa has the most incredible beauty, and her storms are astounding. Keep looking for the beauty. It's there.

I am Proudly South African.
