An unsolved murder, Investigation now deemed “Inactive” by police
Hayley Morgan, aka Hayley Marshall, was a street prostitute and heroin addict, she was just 20 years old when her partially clothed body was found deceased in an alleyway in Hull.
Hayley was reported missing on Wednesday 25th May 1998 and was subsequently found on Friday, May 27th 1998 with a plastic bag over her head, laying under a tree, her body was battered and bruised Despite her injuries and the bag on her head the police say that the 20-year-old died from a heroin overdose.
The coroner recorded an open verdict of asphyxiation and a massive heroin overdose. Home Office pathologist, Dr John Clark recorded that it seemed that Hayley had been kicked and punched causing bruising to both sides of her face and a cut over her left eyebrow.
It was not clear exactly when the injuries had been sustained but the injuries were deemed significant and had been inflicted sometime prior to death.
Hayley plied her trade as a prostitute around the Luke Street area of Hull close to where she lived but it is not thought that she was murdered there. It seems that she may well have been murdered in an unknown location and then her body was dumped in the alleyway off Beverley Road.
I have not so far been able to ascertain how Hayley may have been transported from where she was killed to the deposition site or indeed why that particular place was chosen to dump the body.
Four people in all were arrested for the murder of Hayley Morgan, two men aged 30 and 28 and two women aged 25 and 18, they were all questioned at length at various Humberside police stations. No one was charged with the murder and all four suspects were released.
What concerns me with this tragic case is that Humberside police say that the case of Hayley Morgan is now deemed “Inactive”, not even a cold case that could be reviewed in future. In my professional opinion that is just unacceptable and it should never be the case that murder is simply forgotten.
I am sorry if I am deemed as saying things “out of turn” or something but, I feel Hayley’s murder has only been quietly forgotten about because she was a prostitute and an addict. This is all too common and in recent years is getting worse.
Do the authorities not realise that anyone who ends up in the murky underworld of drugs and prostitution is vulnerable and on many occasions desperate otherwise they would never have gotten into those dark places.
Prostitutes and drug addicts are still human beings, they still have families and friends who love them and miss them. Those families still deserve answers as to who was responsible for their loved ones' death.
