Simple French Toast: A #QuarantineBreakfast

Apr 17, 2020

One must feed themselves during a quarantine right? And you can't (if capable), just eat a lame breakfast or any meal for that matter. I don't do French Toast often. It's definitely a treat. Some label it a dessert. Depending on the amount of additional sugar in your batter and other sweet effects your dress the toast with, it might as well be. Here's all I used to make today's deliciousness. I'm not so exact on measurements here okay. [Big part of any personal cooking journey is testing things out and also finding the suitable amounts for things when not using exact measurements is not a detriment to the recipe.]

  • 4 slices thick sliced multigrained bread [But you can get fancy as you want. Be creative.]

  • 2 large eggs

  • 3 tablespoons of half and half or heavy cream [Turns out this morning I did not have any of either in the fridge but I did have sour cream which I used as a substitute but I cut the amount in half.]

  • 2 tablespoon of sweetened condensed milk [Again if sugar is your thing use a bit more or there's also fine light brown sugar. Personally I never use white sugar. There are so many kinds of sugar. Have at it.]

  • 1/4 teaspoon of ground cinnamon

  • 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg

  • 1 cap full of almond extract [I couldn't find the vanilla but to be honest I was going to use both.]

  • 3/4 tablespoon of butter

Pretty simple right? Okay, if you've never made french toast here's what you do next.

Mix eggs and all ingredients excluding butter into mixing bowl or what have you that is large and deep enough to saturate your bread in the french toast batter you've made.

Pre-heat large skillet, cast iron pan or stove top griddle to medium high heat. Drop in butter as your pan is heating up. *Reminder too much heat you'll burn your butter.

Dip and saturate your first slice of bread in batter mix. Don't let sit. Gently shake off excess and drop coated bread slice in pan. Depending on the size of you pan, repeat and drop in another slice. Brown each slice on both sides.

I like butter on mine and maple syrup.

Let me know how yours came out and what creative mods you implemented.
