Marathon world-record holder Eliud Kipchoge was out-leaned over the weekend by a talented local runner dressed as a mustard dispenser at the inaugural Turkey Trot 10-kilometer race in Long Beach, California.
The lead pack, consisting of Kipchoge, the mustard dispenser, two pilgrims, and a hotdog passed through 5k in exactly 15 minutes. Over the next two kilometers one of the pilgrims and the hot dog dropped back as the remaining trio pressed on.
Kipchoge bided his time as the hotdog and pilgrim took turns surging into the lead. With 400 meters to go Kipchoge surged to the front and appeared to have secured the $100 in prize money but the mustard dispenser stayed within striking distance and eked past the two-time two-time Olympic marathon champion with a diving lean at the tape.
After the race Kipchoge was informed that he would have to forfeit his $75 second-place prize as a result of wearing Native American costume.
