Folklore At Night.

Folklore At Night.

Oct 02, 2021

Cozied up with a good book; gathered around the hearth for story time; diving under the eiderdown from the lingering creeps after a bed time story - all the best tales seem so much better at night!

As Autumn draws in and longer evenings stretch before us, October seems like the perfect time to explore the Folklore At Night theme. We'll be focusing not only on tales that take place at night, but also on nocturnal creatures; and all those creepy aspects that find their way into tales and customs at the this time of year.

There's masses of content to choose from across the world and you can count on the expected films featuring werewolves, vampires and witches, and also folk tales about the night sky and celestial objects. The Night-time also features important folklore tropes relating to deception, dishonesty and vulnerability - villainy often counterpoints with honesty and not everything is straightforward when positioned during the Night.

We have loads of nocturnal characters squirrelled away in our database, and the Folklore At Night theme will see many of them creeping out over the coming weeks: a case in point, below! And as always, please use the hashtag, send suggestions and leave your comments.

Before we say goodbye, we'll dust off our begging bowl. Many of you have been so generous in the past by supporting this project, however, we're trying to establish a membership base. A monthly commitment of a cup of coffee (£3.00 minimum) will really make a massive difference and allow the luxury of generating content, but most importantly the TIME to actually put together lots of written pieces. If you cannot commit £ or $ - not to worry! Spreading the word is also very, very welcome.

As promised, here we have a horror of many children's nightmares... THE SANDMAN. Enjoy!

'The Sandman' (1991) dir. Paul Berry.
