Creating an OC Spaceship model

Creating an OC Spaceship model

Jun 19, 2022

Throughout the past year I've been collecting plastic scraps, bits and bops, lids, interesting small widgets and pretty much all other sorts of trash that has intriguing textures on it with the hopes that I'd eventually use them in some sort of project that becomes an amazing masterpiece. Well, while the masterpiece hasn't happened, I did kind of underestimate the amount of storage space one needs for this type of collection. So in order to whittle down a portion of my lid collection, and to flex my creative brain a bit, I decided to create an original content (OC) spaceship.

This project has been a WIP for little over a half year now, and only really working on it when I feel like it or got bored of other things I was working on. Deciding to get inspiration of everyone's favorite smuggler's ship, I used recycled chipboard from a beer case to get the base shape and then went to town over the course of several months of off and on massive pasting of Trash with Interesting Textures or TITs. (tee-hee)

Of the many TITs added to this trashship, I found various lids from soda bottles, spice containers, broth bottles and even one hammered out beer cap (thanks hubby) as my favorites to add. Bread bag ties and 3d-print rejects also help add in details.

We've got portions of a super glue container, straws, pipe-fitting ends, drywall anchor, pizza grease tables, soap dispenser parts and electrical plug protector covers. At this point I was truly aghast at the monstrosity that I hot-glued together, and I wasn't sure entirely of what I was doing but repeated the mantra: Trust the process. Which I am happy I did, cause that initial spray paint--wowza, what a change!

With all the TITs one color, it's easier to see a spaceship rather than a trash heap! Next step was trying to figure out a color scheme, and I wanted to go a different way than the standard grey-falcon route, so pastels it is!

Okay, so maybe that was a bit too much, so I decided to try out some oil washes, something that I've never tried before. I used a couple of metallic oil paints that I picked up at one point but never used. Might have gone a bit darker than originally, but decided to go with it.

I wanted to get back to some pastels, so I used another new art supply I purchased--Posca paint pens, (omg, they are fantastic, I love them, they are awesome, here's a non-sponsored link to the ones I got)

Lastly, I scuffed up the paint pens and did another lighter oil wash, and did a metallic drybrushing. Overall, the model turned out pretty cool, I'll eventually make a diorama base for this trashship, but for now, I'm focusing on starting up a new Stardew build. Thanks for reading!
