Random Hardware Loot! (Second Episode)

Random Hardware Loot! (Second Episode)

Jun 14, 2021

Hello again! Finally back to writing after a crazy month, let´s take it easy with a quick post about some new random loot!

Even with things going extremely slow with the current restrictions in Argentina I was able to pick up a few things for this particular section of my blog. So let´s jump right in!

First a netbook, locally rebranded by Coradir S.A. a firm that mainly provides cheap computers for schools. The special thing about this case is that I fixed this machine 5 years ago and now ended back with me. Poor thing... definitely saw better days.

The problem was quite easy to diagnose, the hard disk is dead, stuck in a loop of "clicks of death", trying to start but unable to. The fix is also quite simple, just replace the hard disk... but the problem is that the cost just didn´t justify fixing it.

The model is quite old, as shown by a capture of the original report that I saved back in 2016, and aside of a new hard disk it would need a RAM update to give a bit more of steam, but replacing the 1 GB RAM stick it has for a 2 GB only adds to the cost.. And even them the performance in a Windows 7 would be marginal, in the line of I was discussing here. So the costumer ended giving the machine to me, and for the moment is going to live in my spare parts section until I figure out a viable idea to resurrect it and use it in some project or donate the machine.

Now an AOC 712Si LCD monitor. That was a bit... crusty initially. Don´t worry I cleaned the worse of the crust before test the unit, safety first with the virus situation!

Was quite happy to get one of these since I don´t have any of 4:3 aspect ratio. It’s not fully functional since as you can see in the video, with the overload protection kicking in as soon the monitor powers on. But that is good! Since I want to get a few test subject to start to dabble in the arts of electronics repairs. So also going to the spare parts section until that day comes.

And now a couple of printers... first, what is left off a Epson TX125, that poor thing is too far gone obviously but I will recover the glass to make a frame and the internal power supply and boards for my test with electronic repairs.

The second one is a Canon Pixma MP160, sadly missing the black ink cartridges that ended preventing me of doing any full test, but since looks (and sounds) ok, it’s going to be clean up and stored waiting the opportunity to get some test cartridges.

So, that is for the moment! Hopefully now I will return to a more fluid post production again, see you all later!
