IELTS Listening study plan

IELTS Listening study plan

Oct 31, 2021

I keep telling my students that if they want to get their most coveted band score, they should PLAN.

If you go shopping, you PLAN aka you have a shopping list. If you want to deliver a speech, you PLAN aka you write a draft or some notes. If you want to build a house, you PLAN aka you hire an architect, a builder, a bricklayer, a mason, and so on. If you want to ask your boss for a raise, you PLAN aka you prepare a speech in which you highlight your qualities and that you're an asset to that company. And the examples could go on and on.

The Listening test is very mathematical; it's not like the Writing or Speaking test where multiple options, answers, or ideas a possible.

Here's the study plan I recommned. You can easily copy and print it and cross out the stages as you work your way through:

  1. Read about the Listening module:

    • the format of the test

    • timing

    • number of questions

    • types of questions

    • assessment criteria

  2. Read in more detail about each task type. There are a variety of questions type in the IELTS Listening module, such as:

  • multiple-choice questions (MCQs)

  • short answer

  • sentence completion

  • chart completion

  • flowchart completion

  • graphs

  • tables

  • making notes

  • summarising

  • labelling diagrams, plans, and maps

  • classification

  • matching

  • selecting from a list

  1. Read about ways to improve your listening skills and attune your ear. This means that you should know exactly what to for each stage of the listening test: before, during, and while listening.

  2. Focus on each question-type you might find in the actual Listening exam. Each task type targets a listening skill. If you analyse the format of each task type, familiarise with it, and then practise; you will know exactly what to expect on the day of the exam.

  3. Take a practice test under timed conditions and track your progress. See want went well or what you need to improve.
