What Camera and Lens Do I Use?

Sep 03, 2021

This is a common question. I use the Nikon D500 camera body and the Nikon 200-500mm f5.6 lens. I also use the Nikon extended battery pack designed for my camera. This combination has enabled me to get sharp distance and close-up shots of various birds, mammals, flowers, fungi, etc. The camera body shoots up to ten frames per second, and the focusing system is excellent when there is good light. It takes photos on automatic settings and has plenty of bells and whistles for the more serious photographer. The lens is a zoom lens with built-in stabilization that increases the odds of getting a sharp photo. The zoom capability provides more flexibility for composing the shot and in dealing with subjects at varying distances. The extended battery pack reduces the risk of encountering a low battery at a critical moment and makes it easier to switch from portrait to landscape mode. There are dozens of other benefits to this equipment combination, and you can research all of them on the web and YouTube. All of my work is handheld, so the weight can be tiring on long days in the field and even more quickly when photographing birds in flight. I'm considering using a tripod in the future for some shooting situations.
