I was listening to a podcast yesterday as I was taking my morning walk along the Hudson River in Manhattan, and the podcast host said something that will stick with me for the rest of my life.
He said the average human spends 33 years of their life sleeping, 7 of which are spent trying to fall asleep.
I literally was shaken up when I heard this. Might have even had a tear in my eye.
33 years of my life are spent in bed?! 33 years?! We're only given so much time on this earth and I'm gonna spend that many hours sleeping?!
Now of course you need sleep in order to function, but when we start to really think about just how much sleep some of us are getting, it is astonishing how much time we might be spending in bed when it could be spent living life.
How many hours do we spend 'sleeping in?' How many Saturdays are spent just laying in bed for hours? Yes, sometimes a nice sleep-in is definitely necessary for our minds and our bodies to reset and recover, but after a solid 8 hours of sleep, every extra hour spent in bed could be spent more effectively.
The famous actor and former wrestler the Rock once said, "If you woke up broke then you had no business going to sleep." Now, of course, this is extreme, but there is something to take away from it.
Many of us are not living the life that we want, we'd like to feel more fulfilled in our daily activities or want to be more financially stable, and what are we doing about it? Nothing.
Eric Thomas, one of my absolute favorite motivational speakers is famous for saying, "some of you love sleep more than you love success. If you want to be successful, you gotta be willing to give up sleep. If you go to sleep you might miss the opportunity to be successful."
Stop wasting precious hours of your life sleeping more than you need to. It's time for us all to start living our days to our maximum potential, and if we do, unbelievable things are bound to happen.
