Under Keir Starmer, Labour is a safe place for Thatcherites now.

Keir Starmer is heading up the new Tory Party essentially according to former Blair advisor John McTernan. So whilst Liz Truss does her best Guy Fawkes impression beneath her own party, Labour is enjoying the repercussions of her economic idiocy as they’ve now surged to a 33 point lead with YouGov, with other polls showing a similar trend reinforcing the appearance right now that Labour could win a landslide. But if you listen to some of the hangers on, the Starmer fan boys, old school Blairites, you might be surprised at their response to it. That chap there is John McTernan. He was an advisor to both Blair and Brown. He was also an advisor to Jim Murphy the former Scottish Labour leader who presided over Labour getting completely routed in Scotland by the SNP, losing every seat bar one whilst Ed Miliband was leader and he was also an advisor to Australian Labor Party leader and Prime Minister Julia Gillard when she lost too. A top strategist and advisor, very much rooted in the politics of 30 years ago, what a record for defeat eh? Blair was always Margaret Thatcher’s greatest achievement and she said as much herself. McTernan has declared Starmer to be the same here essentially and for those of us who have been Labour members and activists this of course isn’t news, but to the larger country, if you were fooled once by Blair, will you let yourself be fooled again by the brylcreemed boring one? As the brilliant @ToryFibs Twitter account has said today, Tory unpopularity alone isn’t enough. Big poll leads were held at one point by both Michael Foot and Neil Kinnock and they amounted to nothing and whilst voters are saying they don’t want Truss right now, they aren’t necessarily saying they do want Starmer. 17% of 2019 Tory voters in that YouGov poll are now saying they would vote Labour, but 26% of them still don’t know who to vote for. On top of that though, McTernan misses the point that so disgusted are the left with how Starmer’s faction have lied and cheated their way back into control, that unlike before, they do not have the left vote to take for granted either. The Tory Party might have become an out of control libertarian freak show, but Labour has become the Tory Party, so will anything really change?
