Pohang Yoofs

May 16, 2022

The most prestigious of youth teams who have had constant success in producing talents including of course Hwang Hee-chan, often in the final of youth cups so very apt to give the East coast team the Yoof treatment. This team in 2022 has 50% (20) of their registered players coming from their youth schools - remarkable!

Lee Seung-hwan #32 GK current U19 Korean National Team international was a regular in the Kleague Junior U18 last season and was signed up based on his potential and is considered one of the best keepers in his age group. He was 2nd choice at the U17 World Cup behind Gwangju keeper Shin Song-hoon. His strengths include taking high balls, agility and has been praised at youth level for his organisation.

Chances of playing 0-5% - Signed as a professional at an early age and with lots of bodies in front of him chances of playing this season are slim but there seems little doubt that Lee will be a number one in the future. There is a lot of uncertainty in the goalkeeping situation at the club so you never know but looks like a long hold.

Footage (below)- although a heavy defeat his agilty and shot-stopping ability is on show. Two goals come from rebounds and the first shot of the game is an excellent save. He played every game in these clips so feel free to look at more using the Pohang badge as your guidance.

Park Gun-woo #23 is a fullback who has international youth experience with Korea. During his two-year career at Korea University, he was consistently selected as the U-19 representative in 2019. One of his strengths is his defending one on one, and it is regarded as an offensive fullback with an ability to get behind defences and work in tight spaces.

Chances of playing 10-45% - he’s made the bench a few times this season so seems an injury or perhaps Pohang taking a big lead away from getting some minutes at least late in the game. Pohang started Kim Ryun-sung 17 times last season in his debut season though now they have more depth here I think it’s likely with see Park at some stage this season but likely off the bench. Currently Pohang's fullbacks are quite defensive so a change could be of benefit.

Yoon Min-ho, #24 an attacking midfielder who was recruited as a free agent in the winter makes it into our Yoof recruits given this is his first time at K1 level and he comes from the Ulsan Hyundai youth academy which has been very successful in recent years. Yoon played for the K3 Gyeongju Citizen's Football Team and Gimpo FC, and won the K3 League Young Player Award in 2020. Pohang have had huge success in recruiting from K3 with Park Seung-wook at RB/CB so their scouting has worked.

Yoon is a diminutive figure at 171cm but in this video from his youth football days he shows his ability to carry the ball and thread through balls, as well as linking the play and striking the ball from range. He looks like the type of player who suits Pohang's style as they prefer to pass it along the floor and pass from front to back, as well as threaten on the counter.

Chances of playing 10-25%: I don't see why they would bring him up from K3 without the intent to give him some game time. So while he’s only been in the match day squad once as an unused substitute it is likely he is adapting to what the manager wants in training with more chance of playing later on in the season. Although it is also possible that he hasn't been able to bridge the gap between divisions based on performances in training and practice games.
