Ginger Tea Benefits

About Ginger

People used ginger in ancient times for cooking, as a spice, and for medicinal purposes. Ginger contains a strong property called gingerol. Therefore, ginger is used as traditional and alternative medicine. Ginger was originally from Southeast Asia. In 406 AD, ginger was carried on Chinese ships to prevent scurvy.

Ginger May Help with Arthritis Pain

Since ginger has anti-inflammatory properties it is thought that it may help people with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. A study done in 2018 showed that it may reduce inflammation pain in the knee that is caused by osteoarthritis.

Ginger May Help with Sore Throats and Flu

Ginger is good to take during the cold and flu season because it is warming to one’s system and it is antibacterial, antiviral, and decongestion. When taking it during a cold, it is good to drink it throughout the day and have up to 3 cups a day. Ginger tea may prevent colds, soothe sore throats, and ease congestion. A 2011 study, showed that “consuming ginger was more effective against the bacteria that cause streptococcal pharyngitis or strep throat than some antibiotics” (2). It has to be fresh, not dried ginger.

Ginger May Help with Gas/Indigestion

There have been many studies done in the past showing that consuming ginger tea that may alleviate nausea and vomiting that comes with pregnancy, chemotherapy, and motion sickness. Who Should Avoid Ginger Tea

Pregnant women and people taking blood-thinning medications should consult a doctor before consuming ginger. Ginger is “generally recognized as safe” according to the FDA but the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health suggests that people who have gallstone disease be careful when consuming ginger due to the fact that it may increase the flow of bile (1)

Possible Side Effects of Ginger

Ginger may cause some people to have side effects like heartburn, diarrhea, gas, and abdominal discomfort.
