Secondary Ed, Middle Grades, and K-12 people:

The Subject Specific Emphasis is the foundation of your edTPA portfolio.

edTPA Learning Progression Organizer for Secondary & Middle by Mamaw Yates

I've tried to make life easier on you by creating this product that will help you plan out your learning segment with your Subject Specific Emphasis in mind.

All of the handbooks are similar with the exception of something called the subject specific emphasis (SSE). On page 1 of your handbook, you will see a very important section called Overview of the Assessment. This is written in Academic-ese, which makes it hard for most of us to understand and so we have a tendency to skim it. However, this is one of the most important parts of your handbook.

For example, in the Secondary Ed History handbook it says:

"...your lesson plans should provide opportunities for learners to develop and use facts, concepts, and the skills of inquiry, interpretation, or analysis to build and, support arguments or conclusions about historical events, a topic/theme, or a social studies phenomenon."

Those bolded words constitute what is the SSE for Secondary Ed History and they are seen again and again in rubrics 1, 5, 7, 8, 9, 11 and 15. They are usually bolded in those rubrics or they are bulleted.

Read more about Subject Specific Emphasis in the ®edTPA Making Good Choices document, page 11.

I hope you take a few minutes to view my video on how you will use Subject Specific Emphasis.

When you plan your learning segment, it is very important to think about your SSE. You will need to show that during your learning segment, you offered learning opportunities around them. Not every lesson has to have all of your SSE, but the learning segment should contain them.

Notice also that the SSE often follow the levels of higher ordered thinking. Taking the History example, the lowest level of thinking is facts and concepts. The highest would be the building arguments. I bring this up because it is that highest level of thinking that needs to be seen on your Task Two video clips.

This video is 15 minutes long. It explains how to use your SSE to plan your lessons.

This document lists all of the SSE from major handbooks.

As you are planning your learning segment, I urge you to view this video. I will help you see how you need to plan for success! You the learning segment progression organizer for success!

Hang in there!
