Sick of being sick, but not sick of these new episodes!

May 03, 2022

Hello, radio fans!

When it rains, it pours. No sooner had everyone in my house gotten over being sick that I came down with something myself. Fortunately it was not Covid, but whatever combination of allergies (it's pollen time, baby!) and a cold knocked me out.

So, unfortunately, I'm writing again to apologize for a delay in getting podcasts out. But don't touch that dial - new shows are coming your way very soon.

First, on the Down These Mean Streets front, I've got a trio of old time radio mysteries from history - some based on true stories, some fictional - but all set in the past. And yes, all of the shows we listen to are set in the past, but these go back even farther than the golden age of radio. We've got a sensational mid-19th century murder on Crime Classics, an eyewitness account of the death of Wild Bill Hickok from Frontier Gentleman, and a Prohibition-era tale of jazz, mobsters, and a snowman that bleeds from Suspense.

And later this week, Tyrone Power is our Star on Suspense. Sadly, the leading man made only one visit to "radio's outstanding theater of thrills," but we'll pair it with another of his old time radio appearances.

So thank you again for your patience and for bearing with me. As an extra thank you for following and supporting the show, I wanted to share in advance the line-up for the podcasts for the rest of the month.

Down These Mean Streets

May 8th - Get your passport ready for three overseas old time radio adventures. We'll hear stories starring Rocky Jordan, Johnny Dollar, and Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall on their syndicated series Bold Venture.

May 15th - If one private eye is good, three will be great. It's a spotlight on the shamus as we hear from Nick Carter, Dick Powell as Richard Rogue, and Michael Shayne.

May 22nd - If it ain't on the page, it ain't on the stage...or on the air. Either way, the writer is critical, and in this episode we'll salute John Michael Hayes. In addition to writing several pictures for Alfred Hitchcock, Hayes wrote for radio, and we'll hear some of his shows including an episode from The Adventures of Sam Spade.

May 29th - We close out the month with a birthday tribute to Arthur Conan Doyle. Of course, that means Sherlock Holmes but we'll also hear a non-Holmes Doyle story dramatized by Escape.

Stars on Suspense

May 5th - Tyrone Power

May 12th - Paul Lukas' second visit

May 19th - Jim Backus (Mr. Magoo himself!)

May 26th - Margaret Whiting's second visit

May 27th - Bonus show: Best of Vincent Price
