What is a Miniblog?

Aug 15, 2020

Less than 2 minutes to read and less than 500 words.

Well if you Googled “miniblog” in August 2020, the top results are mostly about an obscure type of limited use blog engine using Razor Web Pages and a few for some minimalist WordPress themes.

There are official definitions for blog and microblog (or micro blog).

  • Blog - a website containing a writer's or group of writers' own experiences, observations, opinions, etc., and often having images and links to other websites (definition from Dictionary.com)

  • Microblog - a blog that is smaller than a traditional blog and contains very short entries (definition from Dictionary.com)

In short, the “official” classification for miniblog (or mini blog) is pretty wide open.

Blog

With the proliferation of relatively inexpensive domain registration, web hosting, and the open-source content management system, WordPress, most people are familiar with blogging. Add-on applications to the WordPress engine, called plugins, can provide extra features, bells, and whistles to a basic blog. Full-fledged blogs like these take significant time and a moderate level of technical competence to set up and maintain.

Microblog

Twitter is probably the best known and most used microblogging platform. A post on Twitter, known as a Tweet, can be up to 280 characters of text and you can also include up to four photos, a GIF, or a video. Combining this content-sharing capability with networking qualifies Twitter and similar platforms such as Facebook and Instagram as social media.

Miniblog

To put it simply, a miniblog is much more than a microblog and much less than a blog. A miniblog has more functionality and customization than a microblog without the layers of complexity that comes with a blog. Web hosting, WordPress installation, plus theme configuration, and getting all of the different elements of design and plug-in applications to work together can be demanding.

A miniblog also has fewer limitations on the number of text characters, images, or videos. It also allows for more design customization and feature options. This is also the first level of a blog with options for eCommerce and other monetization options.

Three Levels of Blogging

If you want to do more with your blogging efforts than just gain followers with a microblog, but don’t want to invest the time and money needed for a full blog, then the miniblog is the best solution. You don’t have the limits on the content and functionality of a microblog or the complexity and time commitment of running a blog. The miniblog is the blogging sweet spot for utility and simplicity.
