This is the official NOT ON AMAZON funding page.
The Facebook group page NOT ON AMAZON has been a phenomenal success for the businesses posting and also the customers who are able to buy quality hand made products direct from the producers.
One of the reasons the page has been so well received is the fact that the admin staff put a lot of time and care into deciding what content we allow onto the feed, as well as monitoring the feedback on posts, removing offensive comments and blocking spammers.
With 134,000 members in the group this has become a part-time job for a team of 6 and a full-time job for me as the person who the buck stops with.
The truth is I certainly never expected the group to become the thing that it has. There was a point at around 40,000 members when I was having a serious discussion with my girlfriend about the fact that I set up the group to sell my products but it was taking up so much of my time that I wasn't actually doing my own work and as such had no income.
Eventually we agreed that regardless of income, I had created something extraordinary which was having a positive impact on the lives of literally thousands of people and that if maybe I focussed on helping them that things would work out for me. I guess this could be the definition of 'a calling' life putting me in a position I could never have tried to engineer and me seeing this as an opportunity to make a real difference to the world - a rare privilege, the kind not often enjoyed by a black kid from a council estate..
I guess that's the reason I've stuck with this project. The feedback that has come from grateful business owners who've told me they were ready to pack it all in when Lockdown 2 came into force but had their livelihoods saved by promoting their businesses on NOT ON AMAZON was overwhelming. And all of this has come from a half-baked notion that came to me while I was eating my lunch and looking out the window.
Recently though things have reached a point where the goodwill of friends and keeping a positive outlook are not going to support me financially and allow me to continue to do my job as NOT ON AMAZON Chief Editor - the best job I've ever had and one that I absolutely love doing. So after a lot more discussion and research (all part of the full-time job) I came round to the solution of setting up this Buy Me A Coffee page.
There are number of options available for benefactors who wish to support the cause:
If you are a buyer who wants to support the organisation or a seller who has benefitted from using the group page to promote your work you can make a one-off donation or you can choose to become a regular subscriber.
There are also 'Priority Member' subscriptions for sellers. These offer pre-approval on your group page posts and the ability to post once a day instead of once a week. These subscriptions are available in monthly or yearly options.
With a bit of luck this system should generate more of a steady income which will allow me to focus on taking the group in new directions, exploring new possibilities and making connections with other like minded organisations.
Thank you for your support.
