v3 is coming along

v3 is coming along

Feb 11, 2022

A note to my "followers" in advance of public notice in the usual place ...

Progress is good on the v3 front. As previously posted, it seems to have a much lower memory footprint and is much quicker on big routes.

The UI is a complete revamp; many of the tools are the same but re-skinned. The window has five "docking" areas to position the tools, and the colour of each tool bar can be set by the user. The idea is that each user can arrange the most frequent tools in one or two of the docks, while leaving the less-used tools to languish, perhaps in the bottom drawer.

Layout of views is simplified but I hope still offers enough flexibility. The options are: one view filling the whole space, two views side-by-side, one above the other, or four views in a grid. There's a wee settings icon at top right for you to change to Imperial measure, change the background colour, or reset the layout to the default.

As you can see in the shot, many of the tools now provide a "preview", highlighting points in the views. The highlight colour corresponds with the tool bar colour chosen.

Many other small changes and bug fixes along the way. The code base is much tidier than v1 or v2, which is a good basis for future work. I've still sixteen tickets on my To-Do list, but I'd aiming to have a partial version available for early testing by the end of this month.
