Keep Your Mental Eye on the Target

Keep Your Mental Eye on the Target

Jun 29, 2022

I was listening to a fantastic podcast today hosted by my mentor Dr Karl Morris, called Neuroscience, the missing link to transform your game - Dr Izzy Justice.

One of the more interesting points was about when putting, that they have shown through monitoring waves in the brain that thinking either positively or negatively creates a spike which negatively effects your putting.

We always think that positive mindset and talk helps us however apparently this is not so when over the ball. The place for that is before the pre-shot routine starts and the only positives over the ball are at a subconscious level i.e. smiling.

The only other thing he suggested we do is keep a mental eye on the target. That is the same as what I want you to do with asking you to nominate a time on the clock where the ball will fall into the hole. Your role then is to still have that target in your mind when over the ball. He believes that having that in your mind will also let your body make the stroke that is needed to make the ball reach the hole.

Obviously at larger distances the percentage of success drop however he has shown that this technique shows amazing success compared to having positive thoughts.

So you need to see the line of the putt and label the point the ball will go into the hole and then see that target in your mind when over the ball. Make sure you breathe out and play your shot.
