Day2: #100DaysofInfoSec - Security+ & Study Plan

What is the certification?

According to COMPTIA, the Security+ certification is the first security certification that a candidate should earn. This certification provides you with a baseline and foundation of knowledge to support careers in security.

Why do I want the certification?

Based off what I’ve read from the COMPTIA website and job description, I feel as though this certification will assist in my transition to the security field. A lot of this information is completely new to me so this way I challenge myself and gain the necessary knowledge while doing it. This is my opinion, and this is what works for me.

What do I hope to achieve with this certification?

I hope this certification opens doors wide open for me. This certification will show my foundational knowledge to be successful in a role in Cybersecurity. The process of being disciplined enough to set aside time to study will speak volume for my character.

How am I studying for the exam?

To study for this exam, I am using:

·      CompTIA Security+ All-In-One Exam Guide

·      Professor Messer’s Youtube videos & Practice Exams

·      101 Labs CompTIA Security+

·      CISCO Learning NetAcad- Network Fundamental Course & Cybersecurity Courses (Intro & Essentials)

·      TryHackMe

·      Black Cybersecurity Association study sessions

·      Black Girls Hack study sessions

I used the certification objectives as my baseline. I documented each chapter & Professor Messer video that corresponded to a specific objective.

See below for the screenshot of how I have it set up in Asana.Graphical user interface, text, application

Study Plan

I study one objective a day. I read the Chapter associated with that objective and take the Chapter Exam afterward. I watch Professor Messer to further cement the information. I take practice exams at the end of each week. This way, I can familiarize myself with the type of test questions that are on the exam.  This way, I can identify keywords that will gauge me to select the correct answer. I do hands-on lab work to give me that extra boost of knowledge. I use 101 Hands-on lab, TryHackMe & Get Certified Get Ahead labs site.  I’m a hands-on type of person. The more hands-on work I do the better I understand and know that it’s embedded in my brain. Studying for the Security+ will also prepare me for using various technologies as well as being able to acknowledge them.  Practice, Practice, Practice! I read or listen to a YouTube video on Network Fundamentals to gain more network skills.

I’ve also starting using the Pomodoro technique and I really like it! The Pomodora Technique is a time management system that encourages people to work with the time they have – rather than against it. You basically set an amount time aside say 25 minutes. You will study for 25 minutes straight and break for five-minutes & repeat! EASY!

Black Cybersecurity Association & Black girls hack host various study & information sessions that I attend every chance that I get.

I’ll end todays blog with a quote.

“Believe in yourself, take on your challenges, dig deep within yourself to conquer fears. Never let anyone bring you down. You got to keep going.”

Chantal Sutherland

Hope this helps! Tomorrow I will dive into Network Fundamentals!
