The Frustrations of a Virgo who is Writing Fantasy

May 19, 2021

Y'all.

I am, so annoyed.

This week is supposed to be the week I finish Chapter 12 of my re-write for the Tri-sun Chronicles and submit it to my Beta readers for review before beginning to post them as a serial novel. I am excited to let this story out into the world, but seem to have...built my own resistance block this week.

When I decided to begin posting it as a serial novel I was quite pleased with the decision. I still am. But this week my analytical side (Four of my signs are Virgos) is dragging me through such a frustrating inner monologue that I have found myself unable to touch my work. I hope that by publishing this post, I can not only show honesty about the creative process, but also maybe work through my own doubts.

I am certain that this Resistance (a term I love from the the book, The War of Art) is directly related to my being on the cusp of publishing. I am a very detail oriented being. I'm inquisitive and ask questions all day about whatever topics cross my mind. I love to research and analyze and take great pride in my intellect.

That being said, this story, is, Soft Fantasy. I am not writing an Asimovian level piece of fiction. While my story certainly deals with heavy themes, it is not meant to be an intellectual exercise or a place for me to show off what a clever little human I can be. Why not? Well, because it only wants to live as a character-based, evocative, creative story. Can't it be both? Probably? But not right now? And maybe it already is both and I just don't notice because I am blind to all the dynamics of my own creation?

Either way, my trouble lies in not having a solid sense of moderation, particularly in my own work. So, if I want to world build I want to World Build and tell you EVERYTHING about it. In the same way, my brain began nitpicking plot details and future plot details and past plot details that might become relevant at some point in the future in books 2 or 3 and has started demanding answers to things so that it can foreshadow properly and is worried about missing plot details or character details that will be important later and what if we don't plan properly and we start releasing and we leave huge plot holes or mess up our own ending because we weren't tracking all of the information we wanted to include properly.....do you get the idea?

sighs dramatically

The answer. Is always. The same. Write it. Edit it. Write it. Let it go. Change it later if necessary because it is my work and I'm allowed to do that.

Alright, I'll get back to work.

Thanks for listening. Can't wait to show you guys what I've made.
