I haven’t encountered a more complex children’s book than Child of Glass by the Italian author Beatrice Alemagna. And I am referring to the complexity here in a positive way. This book portrays some of the most complicated mental matters that human beings, in their first years, live. It depicts “the mind” through brilliant words and art that transmit a message that I am not even able to put in words in this review. Let’s talk about the art of the book. I think this is the vehicle to communicate the very ineffable message of the book. Although the story complements what is told with the illustrations, I consider the art in this book talks by itself. What’s more, it is one of the children’s books that I have enjoyed the most in terms of aesthetics. It is just delightful to turn its pages over. The paint combined with collage and the involvement of textures such as vellum pages makes it even more interesting and interactive. The message I pulled out is the heaviness of our current nature of being public beings. We are similar to the child of glass, as everyone can intrude on our most private soul. We are like the child of glass, as through our virtual life, almost everyone can poke into our minds. This is a must-read book for every melancholic adult -like me!- or every child that enjoys outstanding illustrations.

Nunca había visto un libro infantil más complejo que Child of Glass (Niña de vidrio) por la autora italiana Beatrice Alemagna. Y me estoy refiriendo a esta complejidad de manera positiva. Este libro nos acerca a algunos de los temas mentales más complejos por los que atravesamos en nuestra infancia y adolescencia. Representa “la mente” por medio de una forma de arte que transmite un mensaje que no puedo ni siquiera empezar a describir con palabras. Hablemos del arte del libro. Creo que es el vehículo para comunicar el mensaje más bien inefable del libro. Y aunque la historia complementa lo que se comunica por medio de las ilustraciones, considero que el arte de este libro es suficiente. Además, es uno de los libros infantiles que más he disfrutado en términos estéticos. Es, simplemente, un lujo para los ojos. La pintura combinada con el collage y las hojas de calco lo hacen mucho más interesante e interactivo. El mensaje que me llevé con este libro es lo dura que es nuestra realidad como seres públicos. Somos parecidos a la niña de vidrio, pues hay mucho acceso a lo más privado de nuestro ser. Somos como la niña de vidrio que, por medio de la vida virtual que casi todes llevamos actualmente, casi cualquiera puede asomarse a nuestra mente. Este es un libro para adultes melancólicos -cómo yo- y para niñes que disfruten el arte.
