The arrival of the dirty Ram: In my childhood, I've got chased by several rogue goats. I know my drill & captured this from a 3 feet distance. Thankfully he was not in a mood to test his horns.
அழுக்கு ஆட்டின் வருகை: குழந்தைப் பருவத்தில், பல கட்டவிழ்த்த ஆடுகளால் துரத்தப்பட்டுள்ளேன். எனவே ஒரு 3 அடி தொலைவில் இருந்தே தான் படங்களை எடுத்தேன். நல்லவேளை இவருக்கு கொம்பைச் சோதனை செய்ய வேண்டும் என எந்த எண்ணமும் இல்லை.
The incurious: It was clear that the goat not liking travelling this far from home to take a bath. He was visibly grumpy, to say the least. I asked the owner why he looks very uninterested, he mentioned, "it's his regular bathing pond from childhood; since he didn't have a proper bath for the past 3 months due to rains, so he's not interested in the pond bath".
ஆர்வமற்றவர்: வீட்டிலிருந்து இவ்வளவு தூரம் குளிக்கக் கூட்டிவந்தது இந்த ஆட்டிற்குப் பிடிக்கவில்லை என்பது அதன் முகத்திலேயே தெரிந்தது. ஆட்டுக்காரரிடம் ஏன் ஆடு சுறுசுறுப்பின்றி இருக்கிறது என்று கேட்டேன், அதற்கு அவர், "இந்தக் குளத்தில்தான் குட்டியில் இருந்து குளிக்கிறது; ஆனால், மூணு மாத மழையினால் குளிப்பாட்டவேயில்லை, அதான் இப்ப குளத்துல குளிக்க புடிக்கல" என்றார்.
Fastened horns: The unique thing I noticed about this goat was the leash. The horns were fastened with washers & bolts through a hole. Then there was a small steel loop that was connected to a carabiner and a strong rope. As the fastening is done at the outermost edge, in the keratin region, the goats won't feel any pain. Also, I was so close, yet he was uninterested!
இறுக்கப்பட்ட கொம்புகள்: இந்த ஆட்டில் பார்த்த தனித்தன்மையான ஒன்று இது எப்படி கட்டப்பட்டிருந்தது என்பதுதான். கொம்புகள் துளைவழியே துளைத்தகடுகள் & மரையாணிகள் கொண்டு இறுக்கப்பட்டிருந்தன. இது கொம்புகளின் வெளிப்புற ஓரத்தில், கெரட்டின் எனும் பகுதியில் பண்ணப்படுவதால் அவற்றுக்கு வலி இருக்காது. மேலும் ஆட்டுக்கு அருகிலேயே சென்று விட்டேன், அப்போதும் அதற்கு எந்த ஆர்வமும் இல்லை!
Leave me: The owner said, "from childhood, you're coming here, after staying stinky for 3 months, we can't take it anymore, come inside" and dragged the goat inside with the help of his friend.
விடுங்க என்னை: "சிறுசுல இருந்து வந்திட்டிருக்க, 3 மாசம் நாத்தம் புடிச்சு கெடந்துட்டிருக்க, இதுக்கு மேலயும் முடியாது, உள்ள வா" என்று சொல்லி ஆட்டுக்காரர் அவர் நண்பர் துணையுடன் ஆட்டை உள்ளே இழுத்துச் சென்றார்.
Off they go: Swimming improves the strength of their legs. Leg strength is important for a. fighting goat during a fight to sprint & attack.
செல்கின்றனர்: நீச்சலடிப்பது அவற்றின் கால் வலிமையைக் கூட்டுகிறது. சண்டையிடும் ஆட்டிற்குக் கால் வலிமை மிகவும் முக்கியம், அப்போதுதான் அவற்றால் பின்னாடி இருந்து வேகமாக ஓடி வந்து முட்ட முடியும்.
Listening stories: The goat owner was talking to a man standing in the bund of the pond. The goat was listening to it curiously. They were talking about the price of fighting lambs in the market.
கதை கேட்டல்: ஆடு வளர்ப்பவர் குளத்தங்கரையில் இருந்த ஒருவருடன் பேசிக் கொண்டிருப்பதை ஆடும் கூர்ந்து கேட்கிறது. அவர்கள் சந்தையில் சண்டையிடும் ஆட்டுக்குட்டிகள் என்ன விலைக்குப் போகின்றன என்பதைப் பேசிக் கொண்டிருந்தனர்.
Flower tied horns: As the horn was getting cleaned, I started talking to another person standing next to me about how they are holding ram fight events as they are considered illegal in the state. I wasn't surprised by his response. He said, "They can't force anything upon our tradition especially in villages". (Personally, I'm not a supporter of animal fights done for human entertainment)
கொம்புல பூவச்சுத்தி: கொம்புகள் சுத்தப்படுத்தப்பட்டுக் கொண்டிருக்கும்போது நான் அருகிலிருந்த இன்னொருவருடன் பேசத் தொடங்கினேன். ஆட்டுச் சண்டை விடுவது சட்டவிரோதமாக இருக்கையில் எப்படிப் பங்கேற்கிறீர்கள் என்று கேட்டேன். அதற்கு அவர் கூறிய பதில் எனக்கு வியப்பேதும் தரவில்லை. "எங்கள் பண்பாட்டின் மீது யாரும் எதையும் திணிக்க முடியாது மேலும் கிராமங்களில் அது கண்டிப்பாக முடியாது" என்றார். (தனிப்பட்ட அளவில், மனிதப் பொழுதுபோக்கிற்காக நடக்கும் விலங்கு சண்டைகளுக்கு நான் ஆதரவாளன் இல்லை)
Soapy: After swimming for a while, they brought the goat outside to clean it with soap & shampoo. You can tell from the look of the goat, it wasn't a fan of bathing.
சோப்பி: சிறிது நேர நீச்சலுக்குப் பிறகு, ஆட்டை வெளியே கொண்டு வந்து சோப்பு & சாம்பு போட்டு சுத்தம் செய்தனர். அது பார்க்கும் பார்வையிலேயே தெரிகிறது அதற்கு குளிப்பது பிடிக்கவில்லையென்று.
More join: A mother-son duo arrive at the pond as well. The son started play-fighting the mother.
மேலும் இணைகின்றனர்: ஓர் அம்மா-மகன் இணையும் குளத்திற்கு வந்தனர். மகன் அம்மாவுடன் விளையாட்டாகச் சண்டை போடத் தொடங்கியது.
Same story: This mother-son duo also didn't have a bath for the past 3 months. The young son was eager to go inside the water but mother wasn't. She needed pushing just like the other adult ram.
அதே கதை: இந்த அம்மா-மகன் இணையும் கடந்த 3 மாதங்களாகக் குளிக்கவில்லை. இந்த இளம் குட்டி தண்ணீருக்குள் இறங்க வேகமாகச் சென்றது, ஆனால் அம்மா வரவில்லை. முன்பு பார்த்த கிடாயைப் போலவே இதையும் தள்ள வேண்டியிருந்தது.
Seeing the future: The lamb was looking at the adult ram. One day it will grow big horns & will be ready for fights.
வருங்காலத்தைக் காணல்: குட்டி கிடாயைப் பார்க்கிறது. ஒரு நாள் இதுவும் வளர்ந்து பெரிய கொம்புகள் வைத்துச் சண்டைக்குத் தயாராகிவிடும்.
Bathing & caressing: Both the reluctant adults were swimming nicely. The kid was getting the bath in the staircase.
நீராட்டும் ஆறாட்டும்: தயங்கித் தயங்கி உள்ளே வந்த இரு பெரிய ஆடுகளும் அழகே நீச்சலித்தன. குட்டி படித்துறையிலேயே குளிப்பாட்டப்பட்டது.
Coming or not?: After washing off the soap & shampoo, the ram knew it was time to get the hell out of the water. At this moment, it started dragging its owner to the shore.
வரியா இல்லையா?: சோப்பையும் சாம்பூவையும் கழுவிய பிறகு, ஆட்டுக்கு இது தண்ணீரை விட்டு வெளியே செல்ல வேண்டிய நேரம் என்று தெரிந்திருந்தது. அப்போது அது ஆட்டுக்காரரையும் சேர்த்து இழுத்துக் கொண்டு கரை வரத் தொடங்கியது.
Mr Clean: It came out & dragged the owner out of the pond area as quickly as possible.
திரு சுத்தமானவர்: வெளியே வந்து ஆட்டுக்காரரையும் சேர்த்து எவ்வளவு வேகமாக குளக்கரையை விட்டு வெளியேற முடியுமோ அவ்வளவு வேகத்தில் வெளியேறியது.
Shake it sheep: I had this shake-up shot already imagined in my head. But, the first time it did I missed it. So, I kept waiting behind its back for a second shake & I got it.
ஆட்டு ஆடு: இந்த உடலைக் குலுக்கும் படத்தை ஏற்கனவே மனதில் யோசித்து வைத்திருந்தேன். ஆனால் முதன்முறை குலுக்கியதைப் படமெடுக்க தவறிவிட்டேன். எனவே, அதன் பின்புறமாக நின்று காத்து நின்று கடைசியாக எடுத்து விட்டேன்.
Dry run: I thanked him for allowing me to take photos & left from the pond area to where my friends were waiting. We hopped on the bike & headed to our next destination. While on the road, from the pillion of the bike, I got this lucky shot of them running to get dried.
உலர் ஓட்டம்: படம் எடுக்க அனுமதித்ததற்கு நன்றி தெரிவித்துவிட்டு குளக்கரையிலிருந்து என் நண்பர்கள் காத்துக் கொண்டிருந்த இடத்திற்குச் சென்று விட்டேன். வண்டியில் ஏறி எங்கள் அடுத்த இடத்திற்குப் புறப்பட்டோம். அப்போது சாலையில், வண்டியின் பின்னாலிருந்து, உலர வைப்பதற்காக அவர்கள் ஓடிக் கொண்டிருக்கும் இந்த நல்வாய்ப்பாக வாய்த்த படத்தை எடுத்தேன்.
This story is far from over. The ram fights happen usually during Pongal (harvest festival in January) time, and every ram gets a lot of training throughout the year. I will be documenting the lesser-known aspects of this tradition like diet plan for these rams, fight training for the lambs, caring for the hurt rams etc in my next visits.
இந்தக் கதை முடிவிற்கு வெகு தூரத்தில் இருக்கிறது. கிடாய்ச் சண்டைகள் பொங்கல் (சனவரி) விழாவின் போதுதான் நடக்கும், அதற்காக ஒவ்வொரு கிடாயும் ஆண்டு முழுதும் தயார்ப்படுத்தப்படுகின்றன. இந்தப் பண்பாடின் அதிகம் தெரியாத பிற கூறுகளான கிடாய்களின் உணவு முறை, குட்டிகளுக்கு வழங்கப்படும் பயிற்சி, காயமடைந்த கிடாய்களைக் கவனித்துக் கொள்ளுதல் போன்றவற்றை எனது அடுத்தடுத்த பயணங்களில் ஆவணப்படுத்துவேன்.
