Leave non-Tamils but even many Tamils don't know that Jainism (referred to as Jainam, Chainam, Amanam, Arugam in Tamil) was a flourishing religion in Tamil Nadu 2000 years ago; not just anywhere in Tamil Nadu, but in the place where the last Tamil Changam (assembly of scholars & poets) was held, Madurai & a few other southern districts. After studying briefly about it in school, only recently have I explored a lot about it. I've selected 12 pictures from the 10th century's Samanar Hills in Keelakuyilkudi & Yaanai Malai in Othakadai from my travel - தமிழரல்லாதோரை விடுங்கள், பல தமிழர்களுக்கே சமண மதம் (ஜைனம், சைனம், அமணம், அருகம் எனத் தமிழில் வழங்கப்படுகிறது) தமிழ்நாட்டில் இரண்டாயிரம் ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்னர் ஒரு செழித்து வளர்ந்த மதம் என்பது தெரிவதில்லை; தமிழ்நாட்டில் எங்கோ இல்லை, கடைத் தமிழ்ச் சங்கம் நடந்த மதுரையிலும் இன்ன சில தென் மாவட்டங்களிலும் சமணம் செழித்திருந்தது. பள்ளியில் இதைப்பற்றி படித்தபிறகு, இப்போதுதான் அண்மையில் நிறைய தெரிந்து கொள்ளும் வாய்ப்பு கிடைத்தது. பயணத்தின் போது பத்தாம் நூற்றாண்டு கீழக்குயில்குடியிலுள்ள சமணர் மலையிலிருந்தும் ஒத்தக்கடையிலுள்ள யானை மலையிலிருந்தும் எடுத்த 12 படங்களைத் தெரிந்து இங்கே கொடுத்துள்ளேன்.
Samanar Hills - சமணர் மலை
A tip of a huge hill - பெரு மலையின் சிறு குன்று.
The last & 24th Tirthankara of Jainism, Mahavir and a meditating Jain follower - சமணத்தின் கடைசி & 24ஆவது தீர்த்தங்கரர் மகாவீரர் மற்றும் தவநிலையில் சமணர் ஒருவர்.
The natural cave where Jain monks lived, taught, meditated & died. The horizontal carved slot you see on top was holding a roof that was supported by holes at the bottom - சமணத் துறவிகள் வாழ்ந்து, கற்பித்து, தவம்புரிந்து மற்றும் இறந்த இயற்கை குகை. மேலே குறுக்காகச் செல்லும் காடி கீழே உள்ள துளைகள் மூலம் ஒரு பந்தல் போன்ற அமைப்பைத் தாங்க உதவியிருக்கும்.
These oxidised sandstone sculptures have traces of painting work. You can see the remnants of the painting clearly in the sculptures from Yaanai Malai below. The rounded Tamil letter inscription below read, "The sculpture was commissioned by the students of Kanaga Nandhi Padarar and Abinandhi Padarar of Venbu Country's Kurandi Thirukkaattaampalli region, Arimandala Padarar and Abinandha Padarar respectively". Interesting to note these individuals were identified not just by their place but their teacher's names. - இந்த ஆக்சிசனேறிய மணற்கல் சிற்பங்களில் ஓவியங்களின் எச்சங்கள் உள்ளன. கீழே யானை மலை சிற்பங்களில் அவற்றைத் தெளிவாய்க் காணமுடியும். சிலைக்குக் கீழுள்ள தமிழ் வட்டெழுத்துக்கள், "வெண்பு நாட்டுக் குறண்டி திருக்காட்டாம்பள்ளி கனக னந்திப்ப டாரர் அபினந்தபடாரர் அவர் மாணாக்கர் அரிமண்டலப் படாரர் அபினந்தனப்படாரர் செய்வித்த திருமேனி" என்கிறது. இன்னாரது மாணவர்கள் இவர்கள் என்று அவர்தம் ஆசிரியர் கொண்டு தனிநபர்கள் அடையாளப்படுத்தப்படுவது வியக்கத்தக்கதாக உள்ளது.
Atop the Samanar Hills - சமணர் மலையின் மேலிருந்து.
On top of the hill, facing east, these sculptures of 8 Jain Tirthankaras can be found. These were commissioned by the mother of Jain monk Achanandhi, the head of Samanar Hill monastery Gunasena Thevar and a few people from Thirukkaattampalli. - மலை மீது, கிழக்கு நோக்கி 8 சமண தீர்த்தக்கங்கரர்களின் சிலைகள் உள்ளன. இவை சமணத் துறவி அச்சநந்தி, சமணர் மலையில் செயல்பட்ட சமணப்பள்ளியின் தலைவரான குணசேன தேவர் மற்றும் திருக்காட்டாம்பள்ளியைச் சேர்ந்த சிலரார் செய்விக்கப்ப்பட்டதாக அறியப்படுகிறது.
யானை மலை - Elephant Hill
This hill is called an Elephant Hill as it looks like a sitting elephant from distance - தூரத்தில் இருந்து அமர்ந்திருக்கும் யானை போல் இருப்பதால் இது யானை மலை என்றறியப்படுகிறது.
A Hindu monk & his friend are admiring the beauty of Jain sculptures commissioned by Acha Nandhi - அச்சநந்தி என்பவரால் செய்விக்கப்பட்ட சமணச் சிலைகளின் அழகை வியக்கும் ஓர் இந்துத் துறவியும் அவரின் நண்பரும்.
The remains of beautiful painting work & Tamil rounded letters beneath the sculpture. The painting reminded me of the Chithanna Vasal painting quality due to that vivid pink lotus. I wish the govt install some protective covering in front to save what's left from the sun & rain - அழகிய ஓவிய வேலைப்பாடும் சிலைக்குக் கீழே வட்டெழுத்துக் கல்வெட்டும். இந்த ஓவியத்திலுள்ள தெளிவான இளஞ்சிவப்பு தாமரை மலர் சித்தன்னவாசலை நினைவூட்டியது. இவற்றைச் சூரியனிடமிருந்தும் மழையிடமிருந்தும் காக்க அரசு தடுப்பு ஏதேனும் அமைத்தால் நன்றாக இருக்கும்.
Parshvanatha, Mahavir and Bahubali (I think so, please correct me if I'm wrong) பார்சுவநாதர், மகாவீரர் பாகுபலி (என நினைக்கிறேன், தவறெனில் சொல்லவும்).
This rock-cut Mahavir was on a steep hill that is depicted in the next picture. I had to climb the opposite rock & go under a fence to get this view. Here also a lot of the painting work is still intact but unless protected, we'll lose this soon - இந்த மகாவீரர் பாறை புடைப்புச் சிற்பம் அடுத்த படத்தில் காட்டப்பட்டுள்ள ஒரு நெடிய பாறையில் இருந்தது. எதிரிலிருந்த பாறையில் ஏறி, வேலிக்குள் புகுந்து இந்தப் படத்தை எடுத்தேன். இங்கும் ஓவிய வேலைப்பாடு பலவும் அப்படியே இருக்கிறது, காக்கவில்லையெனில் கூடிய விரைவில் இதுவும் போய்விடும்.
Must have been an expensive place to sculpt - காசு அதிகம் செலவான சிலையாக இருக்கும்.
To be continued... Madurai has 30+ Jain abodes on various hills around the city. A few other districts also have unique Jain monuments, some of them are well-protected, some of them are vandalised. Documenting these monuments is another dream of mine - தொடரும்... மதுரையில் மட்டுமே நகரைச் சுற்றி வெவ்வேறு மலைகளில் 30+ சமண வாழ்விடங்கள் உள்ளன. இன்னும் சில நகரங்களிலும் தனித்தன்மை மிகு சமணச் சின்னங்கள் உள்ளன, அவற்றுள் சில பாதுகாக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன, சில அழிக்கப்பட்டுவிட்டன. இச்சின்னங்களை ஆவணப்படுத்துவது என் கனவு
