Interview with Vilma Jackson

Interview with Vilma Jackson

May 06, 2021

How do hearing people appropriate Deaf culture?

What happens when hearing actors are cast in Deaf roles?

Whats the process of creating a Sign Language song?

I sat down with accomplished Black Deaf performer VILMA JACKSON. We talked about Vilma’s journey into acting, watching old comedians on fuzzy VHS and how damaging tokenism is. You’ll also be treated to a selection of Vilma’s work including an excerpt from her multi-award winning film ‘Triple Oppression’

This interview is part of WHAT WORDS ARE OURS, my joyous showcase of Deaf and hearing performers and poets.BSL interpretation by Becky Barry, captioning by Josie Alford, transcription by Christabel Smith. Supported using public funds by Arts Council England.
