She sat down and asked, “Are you ready to play?”
Her tone was empty. “The reason escapes me.”
“The reason for?”
“Any of it,” she answered, appearing deflated. “I’m not even sure I remember how to right now.”
After studying her for a moment, she asked, “When’s the last time you took a deep breath? None of this is real.”
She inhaled deeply and slowly. Exhaling, she looked up to meet her gaze. She held it until she remembered. Until she felt the desire touch her eyes as it restored her voice. With a smile, she said, “Now I’m ready. Shall we begin?”
Her expression remained as unaffected as her response. “Haven’t we?”
