Morning Prayer

Jan 19, 2021

As I was working years ago to develop my spiritual practice - I longed for a prayer I could memorize and say daily. The original poem I found below struck a chord. However, I wanted to remove all the references I found "stressful" and wanted to focus the poem just on connecting with God or what ever concept or value I was working to evoke, sustain, develop at the time. I often substitute those concepts for the word God in order to help anchor those ideas. Ultimately I find that this prayer helps align my mind to my spiritual self each day. Perhaps something like this could work for you also. My version and the original are both below. Blessed be. ~ Caroline
Morning Prayer

(My version with original below)

Oh God,

I come to you in the (Fill in the blank - darkness, light, brightening, etc) Darkness of the morning.
I come (fill in the blank - before, just as) I hear the birds singing their praise to you.
I come before the uncertainty of tomorrow becomes fear.
I come before I try to live out my own plan.
I come before temptation ripens I come to You,
O God, before competing voices can influence

Thank you for giving me this day. Now, I give it back to you.

Live today in me. Live through me. Love through me. Bless through me. Empower though me. Bring Joy through me.

Oh God, I come to you in the (Darkness) of the morning to make your will, my will.

Blessed Be.

Here’s the original text with link:

O God, I come to you in the darkness of the morning
I come just as I am starting to hear the birds singing praise to you
I come before the phone starts to ring, before messages are texted or tweeted
I come to You, O God, before the flood of emails and voicemails
I come before I remember tasks left undone from yesterday
I come before the uncertainty of tomorrow becomes fear

I come before I try to live out my own plan
I come before temptation ripens
I come to You, O God, before competing voices can influence
I come before I can mistake my thoughts for Your voice
I come before I can remember all I want from you and all I want you to do for me

I come, early in this morning, to say I love You and I thank You for loving me
Thank you for giving me this day – now, I give it back to you: live today in me live through me love through me bless through me empower through me rescue through me give joy through me O God, I come to you in the darkness of the morning, like Jesus did, to make your will my will.

In His name, AMEN
