Tokyo unkonown districts: Yanaka

Tokyo unkonown districts: Yanaka

Jan 21, 2021

Shibuya, Shinjuku, Asakusa, Akihabara...Tokyo is much more than these famous touristic areas! It's said that Tokyo is like a pomegranate, made of many small grains, and well, it's true!
Tokyo is a microcosm of different worlds, each with its own soul...

So let's start a journey around the less-touristic areas of the city, discovering what they have to offer and a glimpse of their atmosphere.

Every week I'll post about a new district: follow me to not to miss any update!

Yanaka: temples and local atmosphere

Yanaka is usually visited together with Nezu and Sendagi and this area is often called YaNeSen. It is located in the northern part of Tokyo, not far from Ueno Park, and if you are looking for a traditional atmosphere with wooden houses, local shops and many temples, this is the place for you. It's also called "cat-town" because it seems there are several strays that still survive here, especially in the area of the Yanaka cemetery, a relaxing place for a stroll and one the most suggestive places to enjoy cherry blossoms in Tokyo. In the central shopping street, Yanaka Ginza, you can meet locals doing shopping and you can fully immerse yourself in the Shitamachi atmosphere. Here there are also several used kimono shops, as well as local crafts and independent artists. Many temples have been moved here following the urbanization of other areas of the city so you will find many and in different styles. Do not miss the Nezu Shrine, for me the most beautiful in Tokyo, with its style similar to Nikko's Toshogu.
