Thinking about... chill/no chill!

Thinking about... chill/no chill!

Apr 16, 2023

This past week, it was the second of a two week school holiday for our kids.

Thankfully, my wife and I were both on annual leave from our workplaces, so we got to spend it together (apart from when I was in class). I have two things to say about the week:

  1. It was not perfect.

  2. It was good.

I don't know if, when you have 3 young kids, is it always a prerequisite that expectation and reality must be at such odds with each other or not - but I do know that there were plenty clashes; between adults, between kids, and all the other combinations available.

We can make a plan for how time off goes, we can list the possibilities and hopes of tasks completed, but learning to be OK with some of them being left unfinished can be tough.

In saying all that, it was good. Time off as both parents, together, while our kids were off was necessary. We could have (fairly) full conversations, we could have meals together, we could be lazy and stay in our pajamas, watch too much TV, jumpscare each other etc... all of those things that are not as easy when you're working. All of that is what I mean in the title by chill.

The no chill part is just a sign of the times. You make one comment on social media, asking for context on a 30 second video, and I get trolled! The replies to my comment were so accusatory, I even had my last name made fun of. It was so over the top that it just made me laugh at how some people online have no chill!

I hope whatever the past weeks has been like for you, that you're either rested now, or you get the chance to recover from it soon.
