Wondering about... doing it all.

Wondering about... doing it all.

Mar 31, 2023

I frequently share the following advice with new parents;

Just do what you can, don't worry about doing everything. If there are some dishes needing done, that's ok. If the washing up isn't totally finished, that's ok. If you haven't made the bed, that's ok. When you have a new baby, these things are ok to just leave for a bit. There's no point in stressing about doing all of the things, as well as find your feet with a new baby.

That being said, there comes a time when the kids get older and the stresses of making sure everything is done can creep back in - since there's no longer the 'new baby' card to play.

Well I can say one thing for certain... I'm now re-learning this lesson, nearly 11 years after we first became parents, but not in the same way.

Seasons of life change, jobs change, and so do work/life schedules. I stepped out of full-time employment a few years ago now, and have worked part time since then, with priority being my own childcare. All that being said, I now work nightshift, study part time, and sort my kids out for school etc. What have I learned so far in this full-on, barely a second to think season? You don't have to do it all. Just because you can do things, doesn't meant you have to. Sometimes, doing all of the things can wear you out and lead to burn out.

Therein lies the joy of talking about seasons. They change. I look forward to the next change in life.

Do you know what, sometimes things don't work out the way you planned. Sometimes, saying "I don't think this is wise anymore" is actually the wisest thing you can say. We're can get so scared of doing irreparable damage to ourselves or those around us that we never take any risks. Well, I have taken a risk recently, and honestly, as glad as I am that I took it, I'm changing my mind.

And that's ok.

Let's see what God does next...
