"Avi! Where have you been? You were supposed to have been here an hour ago. I'm tired of covering for you all the time."
"I know. I know, but I was celebrating with Seph. He's getting married."
"Well isn't that wonderful. Is he also giving you a job? Training you to carve wood and build homes?"
"No…why would he do…"
"Then I suggest you start treating this one a bit more seriously! Now, these ewes aren't gonna shear themselves, and we have buyers waiting for the wool, so get to it."
Avi hated when his big brother got on him like that, even if he was right. Sometimes working in the family business wasn't all it was cracked up to be. Still, he was right. The pregnant ewes would be giving birth in a month or two, bringing the lambs into the world, and that meant that the ewes were in desperate need of a haircut, not to mention that the family was in desperate need of the money that the pre-lambing wool would bring them.
He picked up the shears and began making his way to the field, where the flock waited. He had never asked for this job, and honestly wasn't too happy with it. He longed for something more, something meaningful that would change the world, but this is what was expected of him, and it was all he had at the time, so he needed to start taking it more seriously. Who knows, maybe it would turn out to be more interesting than cutting dirty hair. He wasn't going to hold his breath, but who knows.
