How Can You Measure Performance in the Remote Working Set-up?

Apr 04, 2021

A struggle for companies that had to pivot to remote work was how to measure performance and productivity. Should new metrics be developed to allow for a more flexible assessment for output? Or should the traditional ways of measuring performance models remain? This concern comes in light of the harsh economic and psychological effects of the pandemic.

The truth of the matter is that COVID-19 has been very difficult for everyone. In particular, the paradigm shift from office-based to home-based still presents some challenges to this day. This observation is true for both employers and employees. The general sentiment is also divided on how the future workplace should look like. But we’ll need to accept that we can’t return to the way it was before the pandemic. With this in mind, we should now look into the long-term adjustments that we need to make for those still working remotely.

This newsletter will talk about how managers and supervisors should trust their subordinates when delivering tasks. We will also look into other significant factors that have been impactful on the remote working experience.

Building a Successful Remote Team

Millions of employees are now in a remote working setup as a result of the pandemic. Despite quick government responses and the development of vaccines, it’s still safer to continue working at home. Here are a few tips to building a successful team of remote workers:

  • Invest in the right technology. Distance used to be a hindrance to getting jobs done. But with the right technology, distance is no longer such a big deal. Investing in the right digital assets is key to meaningful communications and collaborations.

  • Develop cohesive core values. These are important for employees to retain principles and beliefs that create unity and clarity among the ranks. Companies these days have to take on new core values that are relevant to the existing pandemic.

  • Choose an effective leadership style. It’s important for leaders to develop trust, teamwork, camaraderie, and compassion. Don’t just check up on the work progress of your team members, ask about their general well-being too.

  • Foster an environment that values accountability. In remote work set-ups, there is no actual work supervision. As such, it’s important to ensure that employees are still held accountable for the tasks that they assigned to. Supervisors must also set clear expectations and be proactive in communicating with their team members.

Key Factors: Employee Engagement and Online Mentoring

In the remote working set-up, it is essential to empower employees. Doing so gets rid of negative thoughts and emotional distraught caused by isolation. The continuous strain of remote work is growing more apparent as the months go by. Through employee engagement and online mentoring, we’re better able to gauge our employee’s well-being. Happier individuals lead to more passionate, driven, and productive employees.

A few successful approaches to empowering various employees are the following:

  • Provide additional support for working parents

  • Engage women to assume remote leadership positions

  • Diversify recruitment
