The best writers

The best writers

Aug 07, 2021

Why do writers of such beautiful stories often carry such tragic pasts? Why do writers who capture the essence of being human often bear scars from humanity’s darkest side?

Because the best writers are the ones who have spent hours submerged in their minds. They’ve wandered through the jungles of imagination, constructing heroes for company and villains for battle. They’ve stared into the black hole of their darkest nights, wondering if anyone would notice should they slip off the edge and fall from existence. They know the power of words, as they have been tested by their fire and healed by their strength. They have craved escape from the horrors of reality and prayed for rescue from the horrors of their thoughts.

The best writers don’t become the best just because they’ve studied or practiced or created writerly habits. They are the best because they understand what it means to suffer, to struggle, to survive. The best writers are the ones who have lived.
