Reflection: The Why of Poetry

Reflection: The Why of Poetry

Mar 31, 2022

Amongst many others around the world, I am a great fan of Rumi sayings and poetry.  It can often seem at first simple but on reflection can reveal much deeper thought and personal reflection on ourselves.

“Poems are rough notations for the music we are.”

Rumi alludes to the connection between music and poetry; suggesting that poetry, like music, has the unique property to explore or reveal the essence of who we are. What is remarkable in his perception of the link between the two art forms, is that it has recently been discovered in neuroscience that poetry and music have a similar and positive effect on the brain in helping us make new expansive neuron connections.

Poetry also like music allows us to respond and recognise and identify our inner emotions and feelings, that are often buried and embedded in our subconscious. Rumi often urges us to look to our inner world, to find the wellbeing and resolution we seek. I believe writing poetry has a real role to play in helping us to achieve this aim.
