Longing for Cupid's Love

Longing for Cupid's Love

May 03, 2021

Note: this story is only loosely based off the mythology about Valentine's day, Cupid, and love. This story caters to my own imagination instead. I wrote it a while ago, but I edited and revised it because I wanted to share it with you! I hope you'll like it, and thank you for reading.

It was over the ocean and over the roaring streams of gold. It applauded everything that was meant to be told, and all of which lied in waste. No matter how far the course of one’s journey to taste it, they could never find what it was to be. Blind men died searching, and those who could see knew they would never make it. Over time much like a tragedy, it became forgotten and turned to a myth. Sitting in dust like the world had turned over its page, it appeared the ending had come. Then in turn did the stars begin to shine less, and the world slowly became cased in ice.

Love pounced on the young as if they were unsuspecting prey. Piercing their minds like an arrow struck straight in Achilles’ heel. It was the beginning of a notion only Cupid would make, and in its wake did they stand. They were waiting for an order to be made. This decision would allow the world be cleared of its icy prison. It would shift them back into a new era of peace. Where stubbornness and cruelty would become obsolete, and everyone would fall in love. Love spoke with an allured tone to Cupid and almost pulled them towards her.

The very thought of it was pleasing to them. Like they were just almost meant to be, but only she could give them the order they had needed. Listening carefully as she spoke her words, Cupid considered what they would need to do. Then she had signaled it was time to go, and just as quickly as the two had met, they flew off to do what was needed. It was time to go back to the ice block that was Earth. They would ‘pour hot water’ over it, and let it melt back into its rightful place. All that was needed now was persistence and commitment to their love.

It was the fourteenth day of the second month of the first new year when Cupid’s golden arrow struck the planet. It broke through the mold of the world’s frozen proximity. Pushing intense love filled with the deepest warmth, it consumed over all the bitterness seething in the human’s souls. As the young were the first to know, the old became entwined with joy and admiration. It was like a crackling flare, the power of Cupid’s arrow that brought everything into this new order. The Earth was shaking with nothing but pure awe, granting to those who had longed for it.

As a young man watched from the shadows, he realized he would never have that of which he longed for. Cupid would never give it to him, and he would forever be forced to watch solemnly from the darkness. As night swallowed him whole, he took one final breath before he fell asleep. Maybe tomorrow would it stop, that longing- the one thing he ever wanted:

Cupid's love.
