The Application Portal

The Application Portal

Nov 24, 2021

If you've taken advantage of an Early Action or Early Decision application option, you're already in the thick of the admissions process. Many colleges will lead applicants to an admissions portal.

Do not neglect the portal thinking that the essential communication from an institution will reach your email address. The portal is all-important, the key to back-and-forth communication directly with the college or university to which you've applied.

This blog post from Georgia Tech provides a good primer on portals and why it is important to visit the portal AND check the email address associated with your application(s) "You may be asked to submit more information. This is why it’s critical to check your portal every week or so. A potential change in your application status is also why you need to OPEN AND READ the emails you receive from colleges where you’ve applied. We get it—we know you get a ton of emails from a lot of colleges! But if you read nothing else, at least read the messages from schools where you have an active application on file. Emails from those schools are timely and can impact whether or not you receive an admission decision on time."

Some institutions, like Colorado College, want you to get used to using a portal right away, asking that students fill out a preliminary application.

And there are the institutions that might ask some more questions of an applicant pertaining to financial aid through the portal -- Bryn Mawr is one.

Punch into your phone or post on a bulletin board friendly reminders to check those portals! You'll be glad you did!
