Welcome to Turtle Town

It looks like a boxing ring...but things are not always as they appear! πŸ’™πŸ©΅πŸ’š

This is my first look at a sea turtle's nest, just a few hours old, across from a friend's house less than 3 miles from where I live.

Some very special flippery gal, born not too far from this very beach, returned for the first time Friday night, spending long slow hours swiping away the sand as she burrowed a den more than twice her body size to lay a clutch of precious eggs.

She stole away in the moonlight with hardly a trace, leaving the nest to Mother Nature and to kindly beach-goers who will eagerly watch over it, hoping for the first sign of movement as the two-month incubation period winds to a close.

Mama turtles lay up to 100 eggs in a nest, and return near the same area to build another after they take a well-earned year off. The gender of the hatchlings is temperature-dependent; so, a milder season will make more male hatchlings, and warmer weather yields more females.

More updates to come from this turtelly-exciting experience! πŸ’™πŸ©΅πŸ’š
