Howdy! I am Kristy Darnell Battani, a full-time practicing Artist from Austin, Texas. I created the ARTish Plunge podcast for everyone interested in the curious relationship between Artists and the other professions, day jobs, or past vocations that have allowed them to make the art they do— or in other words, enabled them to take an Art-ish Plunge.
My own creative journey began in law school not art school. For years, I struggled with balancing my creative impulses with a more traditional career path—and the ensuing “impostor syndrome”—until I read about the countless “real” Artists who have pursued any number of other vocations either before or concurrently with their art practice. Cezanne, Matisse, Degas, Kandinsky, just to name a few, shared my legal background. Other notable Artists have been accountants, scientists, nannies, teachers, and plumbers. The examples are as varied as the works they created.
Each week on the ARTish Plunge podcast we will meet an artist who has had, or continues to engage in a vocation outside the art world. We will discuss the artist’s current work, but also look back at how our guest’s path and other experiences have impacted the work they are making now.
