Strange Change

So a little while ago when I said that I was shutting down my blog for the foreseeable future, what I did not foresee was the generosity of my supporters here. I really thought everybody would be saying "Hey, he ain't writing, so I ain't contributing" — but instead I received unexpected grace. What I got was support for what I've done in the past, hope for what I might do in the future, and patience with me in the present. It has been a really special gift. I am... more

Hallowtide Update

Hello, friends! Let me begin by thanking you all for your warm and encouraging support of my diverse and divergent activities. Last week I had an absolutely wonderful time at Laity Lodge, my happy place, leading a retreat with the great Jessica Martin. Photos from the retreat are up, and the audio will follow in due course. When that audio is available, I hope it will include Jessica's homily from our Sunday Eucharist, because it was a memorable one. I am not returning in any full way to... more

An Announcement

Because of certain health issues in my family, this past year has been the most difficult of my life, and there are no indications that things will get better any time soon. This inquiring mind wants to know

Hello everybody — I have some thoughts and a question. The biggest difference between writing for publication and blogging is that when I write for publication I write what I already know, while when I blog I’m trying to discover new things. (Why would someone ask me to write for publication unless they think that I really know something?) Writing for publication is summative, blogging is formative. I get a sense that most writers my age are in... more

Midsummer Report

From Thursday to Sunday of last week I was at Laity Lodge — or, as I like to think of it, the Texas Rivendell — co-leading a retreat with the amazing Sara Hendren, with music by the equally amazing Claire Holley. (I’ll have more to say about those ladies in a future post.) Our retreat was called The Work and Joy of Repair, and it grew out of my Invitation and Repair project and Sara’s thinking about critique... more
