There are two types of shadow to look out for: Core shadows and Cast shadows

Core shadows are the play of shadows that you find on the object you are drawing or painting. In most of these photos the core shadows are on the tree trunks and branches. You can observe the subtle changes in these and use your shading to add form and dimension.

The 'Cast' shadow is exactly that, the one that is cast by blocking out the light. For example, your own shadow as it falls on to the pavement. Or the shadows the trees are casting on the ground. They tend to be darker than core shadows.
