Weekly Prompt: Shadows

Weekly Prompt: Shadows

Oct 12, 2020

As the sun sinks lower and the shadows get longer I thought now would be a great time to look at the effect of light on our natural surroundings.

Whether its bright autumn sunlight (fingers crossed) or putting on your indoor lights a little earlier each evening, shadows are springing up everywhere.

So this week's prompt is Shadows. You can capture them in anyway you like. It might be fun to set up some objects on a table, lay your sketchbook down and then trace the shadows onto your page. What about colouring those shadow shapes in to create an interesting abstract, based on real life? Why not revisit the 'line worksheet' to set up three household objects and look at the shadows those cast?

Here's a drawing from a sketchbook of mine a few years ago where I drew some buttercups on holiday and then photographed the cast shadows of the same flowers on top of the drawing. I always thought it would be nice to paint the shadows onto the page as a light watercolour. I'd never got round to it before.... maybe this is the week to try it out!

And here's some photographic inspiration of natural and artificially lit shadows to help get you thinking about how you can approach this week's prompt.

I look forward to seeing your artwork which you can post to our Facebook Group if you would like to.
