Sep 12, 2020

Spooky Business

By S.E. Harmon

Book 3 of the Spectral Series

Release Date: September 14, 2020

Being insatiably curious is a good way to end up dead.

The Storyline: Spooky Business

Being insatiably curious is a good way to end up dead.

Rain Christiansen, cold-case detective and reluctant medium, is very aware of that fact. But when infamous serial killer Thomas Kane wants to meet, there’s no way Rain can say no. He also can’t refuse Kane’s offer—find his missing wife, Delilah, and he’ll reveal the location of his victim’s bodies.

Rain has never turned down a good quid pro quo, and he doesn’t intend to start.

The hunt for Kane’s wife leads to yet another cold case, three
copycat murders, and an investigation where nothing is as it seems. Soon, Rain is dealing with a ghost unlike any he’s ever dealt with before…a ghost capable of doing things he shouldn’t be able to do. How can Rain control something he doesn’t even understand? And what will he do when the unknown threatens the safety of the most important
person in his life?

Rain is starting to realize that he can only battle the supernatural with the supernatural, and that is spooky business indeed.

What I Liked

The banter. Oh, the banter. The prior two also had the banter in it not just between Rain and Danny, but also between members of the team, other family members, and even suspects. I will say however, I think if you watch the evolution of it through the series between Rain and Danny, it is a clear indication that their second chance relationship was becoming deeper and deeper.

The mystery storyline of the book was well developed and had a number of twists and turns. A few surprises along the well threw me for a loop in the process. Admittedly, at one point I was surprised that the case was solved...but I was far from the end of the book. Don't worry, the story continues and you will not be bored. Sorry, I am trying hard to avoid spoilers in a very action-packed book.

OK, I would be remiss not to mention the sexual component. YEP, she knocked that out of the park as well. I liked the fact that the sex was part of the normal course of romance, well, deepening romance. It was not sex for the sake of sex.

Besides Rain & Danny, I also liked Dakota....he popped up in book two, Principles of Spookology, and remained in the same role here. He is my favorite secondary character. I am hopeful that Ms. Harmon will do a spin-off with him soon into his own novel/series.... (wink wink, hint hint).

THIS IS A HAPPILY EVER AFTER BOOK....well as happily ever after as it can be with ghosts that come and go at any time.

What I did not Care for

There was not anything that jumped at my reading that I found to be overdone or did not fit. I personally did not understand the real reason the ghost did not want to leave, other than just being stubborn. But with that, I have met my share of stubborn people in my life, so I get it from that angle. Overall, that did not take away from the story for me :-)

My Recommendation

I am not even going to hide it...I was hooked in the first couple of pages. Previously, I have read the other two books in the Spectral Files. When Ms. Harmon emailed me about 10 days ago to see if I would be interested in reading the advance copy, my response was "Yes Please, Yes Please, Yes Please". I was glad to see that the book was not just hyped up in my mind....it delivered!
