Are Creative Journal Goals Necessary?

Are Creative Journal Goals Necessary?

Dec 30, 2022

Hey, Lovelies!

I want to expand on what I shared in the last episode of the Daily Ephemera Podcast.

If you don’t know, I post a podcast/journal with me video once a month for subscribed members on Buy Me a Coffee.

Quick episode overview:

• I talked about 2023 projects

• My increasing self-consciousness about sharing online and how I'm becoming okay with not sharing every journaling session

• The reason why I started the 1134 Press project and creative journaling in the first place

After uploading the podcast, I couldn’t stop asking myself, “is making creative journal goals necessary?”

Well, let me ask you this—do you identify with any of the titles below?

  • Documenter

  • Archivist

  • Family historian

  • Storyteller & collector

  • Artist

  • Designer

  • Content creator

If yes, then it is absolutely necessary to make goals for your art practice that will continue to confirm and strengthen your identities and skills.

When we think of new year’s resolutions, they are traditionally focused on professional goals, health, and relationships. There may be a project here and there or something fun like travel, but we rarely put an independent study or creative practice in the mix.

Why doesn't creative journaling goals make the New Years resolution cut?

• It’s not monetary driven

• It’s not vanity driven

• It’s not easily understood and accepted by others

Despite this, how do you make goals for your creative journal practice?

I don’t want to belabor the points that came up in my rambling in the podcast, but, in summary,

the first step is to be reflective on where you’ve been and then ask yourself where you want to go. The steps you discover in between are where the creative magic of 2023 will appear.

I hope you are having a great holiday season!

Thank you for being one of the best parts of 2022.
