Updates from March and April

Updates from March and April

May 27, 2023

Greetings, everyone! I trust you're prepared for some thrilling updates from me since I've been quiet for a couple of months. Let's explore critical thinking in children and urgent issues like mass shootings, abortion limitations, and climate justice.

I spent March writing two blog posts, but I'll only focus on "Who Are People of the Global Majority and Why It Matters." I explore the significance of using the term people of the global majority with children and how it can impact their critical thinking skills. Critical thinking is vital in our increasingly digital world where we are constantly bombarded with information from a variety of sources. It is essential that we teach our children to question what they encounter and to think critically about the messages they are receiving. Only by doing so can we hope to create a more informed and engaged citizenry. One way is to engage with children by asking questions such as, "Who is visible? Who is erased? Is this media accurate?" By nurturing these skills, we empower them to become more discerning and conscious information consumers.

In Texas, particularly Houston, I've become increasingly concerned. We have witnessed several devastating mass shootings, the implementation of more abortion restrictions, and a state takeover of our local school district. In response, I have poured my energy into writing "How To Talk About Abortion As a Family." This post aims to facilitate open and constructive conversations about a topic that often sparks intense debates in homes.

In April, we celebrated Mother Earth Month. And what better way to do that than to showcase some of the amazing young black climate activists who are leading the charge on climate change and racial justice issues? In my latest blog post, I highlight 10 of these inspiring individuals. Climate change is one of the biggest challenges we face as a planet. And it is important to remember that the impacts of climate change are not felt equally by all. People of the global majority and exploited communities are disproportionately affected by our climate violence and its impacts. This is why the fight against climate change must also be a fight for racial and economic justice.

Inspired by How To Talk About Abortion As a Family, I have another blog being released focused on consent. But for now, I wanted to share this invaluable resource from Planned Parenthood to support your conversations.

Laurin and I are committed to delivering two newsletters a week. On Tuesdays, we provide teachers with strategies, advice, and information developed specifically for the classroom setting. The Weekender, on the other hand, focuses on helping grownups raise antiracist children. Remember to keep an eye out for these newsletters – you don't want to miss anything!

Saving the best for last. I'm thrilled to be collaborating with Tiffany Jewell on an exciting project. We are in the process of creating a children's book series that will help promote self-empowerment and liberation. We hope to have more information available soon, so please stay tuned for additional updates. Our goal is to create a series of books that will inspire children to lead more loving and liberating lives.

Your contribution is fueling this important work. Thank you for your continued support and solidarity.

rooting for you,

Britt
